That is the way it goes between my mother and me. She cultivates a low-level depression and I see it as my lifelong duty to cheer her up, to do whatever might make her happy.
I was also buying into the fantasy that my mother would morph into the soccer mom of my dreams: chirpy, polite, listening intently to stories of my life and offering a stream of positive axioms.
I tried to talk to her about my hopes and fears, she commented on a road sign, switched the radio to a news station and looked out the window.

To my mother.” And there, in a nutshell, you have it: in its closing moments, Almodovar announces (though he’s made it clear long before) that All About My Mother is a film about acting, about women, about acting like a woman, about drag, about mothers, about acting like a mother.
Mother is far from an academic exercise; rather, it’s stunning and sprawling, a film that captures the giddy spirit of fun that defined much of Almodovar’s early work while cementing a turn towards something more ambitious and meaningful.
With All About My Mother, the Almodovar project, such as it is, achieves a near-perfect visual and thematic unity; it is the pinnacle of an exceptional career.

All About My Mother tells the story of Manuela (Cecilia Roth), whose teenage son Esteban (Eloy Azorin) insists on learning about his absent father.

In "All About My Mother," he forces the audience to love his characters through cloying candor, which leaves "All About My Mother" as little better than the secular equivalent of most Christian filmmaking: preachy, obvious, and designed to make its core audience pleased with itself.
