  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Falling Down
Falling Down is a 1993 film by Joel Schumacher about "D-Fens" (named for his license plate), an unemployed Irish-American missile engineer played by Michael Douglas making an attempt to "go home" for his daughter's birthday after his car breaks down in traffic on the hottest day of the year.
Falling Down has been criticized for being prejudiced against defense workers and several racial groups; while these critics have a point, they overlook the point of this film, which is to make a powerful statement about our times.

Falling Down - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The title of the film refers to Foster's mental collapse and Prendergast's wife's insistence that she and her husband retire to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where the old London Bridge was moved (from the nursery rhyme London Bridge is Falling Down).
The conventions of film genre made Falling Down follow the pattern of a classic Western complete with a gun duel at the end.
In a minor coincidence, the release of Falling Down (which contains several references to "the point of no return") coincided with that of the Bridget Fonda action film Point of No Return, in which a character briefly recites London Bridge is Falling Down.

 'Falling Down'
All it has to do is strike a nerve, and "Falling Down," director Joel Schumacher's hysterical movie editorial about a man stretched to the breaking point by the traumas of everyday life, certainly digs its instruments into our most sensitive social fibers.
It's a kind of backwards compliment to say that Douglas does a fairly watchable job of big-star acting here, but his challenge was to play the character straight down the middle, and he meets this challenge so skillfully that the filmmakers almost get away with their moral fudging.
But in "Falling Down," he and Schumacher want to have their cake and eat it too; they want him to be a hero and a villain, and it just won't work.

Bad Subjects: Falling Down: Social Contracts and the Logic of the Absurd   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Falling Down's mixture of comical and anarchistic violence with a voice of dissent can be distinguished from the social transgressions of the anarchistic comedy, where a repressive, social order is momentarily subverted in favour of an unarticulated and utopian order of anarchic freedom.
Falling Down issues its social challenge as a challenge to empathise with an object of violence that is represented as "not fully real".
In this and other instances, Falling Down forces a contractual response from spectators by creating a feeling of moral ambivalence and unease in relation to a comical look at a dying man. We are the ones who must restabilise the social contract by empathising with the victim of D-Fens' violence.

Falling Down opens up with "Zealous Core" and "My Ever My All," and features some funky bass lines similar to Beck accompanied by some sweet guitar solos.
The album slows down to the more worshipful and passionate "M" ("Majesty"), and "Fine," which I felt was one of the best songs on the album which has a nice acoustic feel with a mix of turntables and electronic noise you'd most likely find offered from Riley Armstrong.
Overall, Falling Down is a very joyous, very upbeat and happy as worship should be.

Filmtracks: Flatliners/Falling Down (James Newton Howard)
Flatliners/Falling Down: (James Newton Howard) One of the more sought after private CD releases of the mid-1990's was this combo album released in 1997 with two of James Newton Howard's scores for well-known films.
Supposedly, the experience is reported to one of peaceful bliss, but these cocky students at University of Chicago manage to turn the affair into a series of gloomy and suspenseful maneuvers in resuscitation, all set in a Gothic and shadowy environment that causes the film to walk a fine line between adventure and horror.
No strong theme or motif exists in Falling Down, with one of the most unique identifiers of the score being a wavering electric guitar that slurs between notes as the man's mental breakdown continues.

Falling Down (1993)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Tagged as `the adventures of an ordinary man at war with the everyday world,' Joel Schumacher's `Falling Down' tells the tragic tale of William Foster aka D-FENS, a now unemployed defense worker who finds himself trapped on a hot summer day in bumper-to-bumper Los Angeles traffic.
Having been pushed past the brink of sanity, Foster loses it and storms out of his car, walking around town and trying desperately to see his little daughter for her birthday, a daughter who is untouchable because of a court order against him by his estranged wife.
I recommend this movie because the performances are all-around great, it delivers a solid cast, and as the portrayal of one man's journey down the path of madness, few have done better.
