Conventionally grown - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Conventionally grown is an agriculture term referring to a method of growing edible plants (such as fruit and vegetables) and other products.
Conventionally grown products, meanwhile, often use fertilisers and pesticides which allow for higher yield, out of season growth, greater resistance, greater longetivity and a generally greater mass.
It is opposite to organic growing methods which attempt to produce without synthetic chemicals (fertilisers, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones) or genetically modified organisms.

Comparison of food quality of organically versus conventionally grown plant foods
Conventionally grown carrots (fall-winter crop) had significantly higher nitrate levels in 4 of 8 cases, while organically grown were higher in 3 of 8 cases; the nitrogen supplies for both types of carrots were equivalent.
Conventionally grown tomatoes were significantly higher in crude protein (fresh weight basis) for the first of two growing seasons, but no difference based on cultural practices was found for the second (Clarke and Merrow, 1979).
Differences between the chromatograms of organically grown and NPK fertilized collards detected by a panel and based primarily on differences in the pattern of the spokes were thought to be due to the effect of nitrate concentrations (Knorr, 1982b).

Nutritional Considerations - Organic Trade Association
There is mounting evidence that organically grown fruits, vegetables and grains may offer more of some nutrients, including vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus, and less exposure to nitrates and pesticide residues than their counterparts grown using synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.
Organic fruits and vegetables have only a third as many pesticide residues as their conventionally grown counterparts, according to a study by Consumers Union (CU) and the Organic Materials Review Institute.
Reviewing 41 published studies comparing the nutritional value of organically grown and conventionally grown fruits, vegetables, and grains, certified nutrition specialist Virginia Worthington has concluded there are significantly more of several nutrients in organic crops.

Out There Tracks of my tears
Men, on the other hand, were brought up to believe that it was preferable to lose a limb than to shed a tear.
Back when men ruled the world, a woman’s public tears were the ultimate expression of her vulnerability, her emotional fragility and temperament, her innate frailty and inability to handle the stress of the big, bad world.
Apparently, men are now co-opting tears for their own purposes, and using them as a management tool.

David Byrne: Grown Backwards: Pitchfork Review
If you hold the cover of Grown Backwards before your face at the precise angle, twisting your head to the right slightly, the mirrored finish of its packaging superimposes your visage over David Byrne's remarkably unchanged face.
Like the Neverland of J.M. Barrie, alluded to on "Pirates", Grown Backwards sounds like a subconscious composite of Byrne's loves, fears, influences, and fantasies.
Grown Backwards, as the title suggests, skips whistling into maturity, and employs this concept as its thematic core.

Organic Foods Really DO Have Less Pesticides: New Study from Consumers Union
A conventionally grown apple tested by USDA in 1996 was more likely to contain four or more residues than to contain three or less, and some individual samples have been found with as many as 14 different residues.
Conventionally grown samples had multiple residues in 46, 12 and 62 percent of USDA, DPR and CU samples, respectively.
CU tests found residues in 79 percent of conventionally grown samples and 27 percent of organically grown samples, with multiple residues ten times as common in the former.

Conventionally grown foods cost less because the unseen costs of creating synthetic inputs, the resulting pollution from spreading them, and possible long-term health effects of pesticide residues in our food are passed on to the consumer and the environment.
As a result, the organically grown plant will be able to add more and complex components to all of it's parts, including its fruit, resulting in a pepper chock-full of micro-nutrients and trace minerals that are important for human nutrition.
Many people are aware that food that is grown according to organic principles is free from exposure to harmful herbicides and pesticides, but that is only one small aspect of organic agriculture.

David Byrne: Grown Backwards - PopMatters Music Review
That stinks up its corners of Grown Backwards like it did to Look into the Eyeball, but only a couple of songs suffer heavily for it, namely "Dialog Box" and "Civilization", both of which at least prepared the listener for his or her immanent groan with their titles.
Indeed, Grown Backwards is not without its flaws, from songs that sound more like a soundtrack than something that deserves full attention to lyrics that seem like holdovers from a persona Byrne has been well-served in at least partially shedding.
Grown Backwards' restraint risks landing it in a coffeehouse ghetto that only asks for its music to be ignorable, but just because something can be ignored doesn't mean that it should, as the solid handful of excellent moments here proves.
