This brings me to my final point, which is the critical role of education and of the importance of institutions such as the All India Institute and Harvard University in developing that new knowledge and passing it along to their students, the rest of the world, and future generations.

 AIIMS medicos on strike, medical services affected
Medical services at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here were paralysed following the flash strike of resident doctors protesting the move to sack director P. Venugopal who moved the Delhi High Court challenging his sacking.
At least two patients at the country's premier medical institute died Thursday, though AIIMS spokesperson Shakti Kumar Gupta said they were being attended to by doctors at the time of their death, and the strike was in no way to be blamed for it.
Venugopal, India's best-known heart specialist, marked his 64th birthday Thursday by filing in the court a petition seeking a stay on his removal saying he had not flouted any code of conduct of AIIMS as alleged by Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss Wednesday.

 Response of Medical Schools to Societal Needs
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at New Delhi, India was established in 1956 by the Government of India with the primary objective of developing patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of education.
AIIMS is an autonomous institution and is free to adopt innovative strategies in medical education and set example for the rest of the medical schools in the country.
The consortium institutes adopted an "Inquiry-driven strategy for innovations in medical education" which consisted of: collecting data-base from a variety of sources, viz., morbidity and mortality statistics, disease patterns prevalent in the community as reflected by the in-patient and out patient statistics, perceptions of the faculty, students and resident doctors about the quality of training.

Bharatiya Janata Party MP V.K. Malhotra, who is a member of the institute's governing body, said the decision was not unanimous and the issue was discussed even though it was not listed in the agenda.
Many faculty members allege the government was targeting the AIIMS for being at the centre of the protest by resident doctors and medical students against the government's move to increase caste-based quotas in central institutions of higher education.

The first serologic evidence of EV-70 infection in India came from Bombay (western India) in 1971-72 (4), and the first isolation was reported from a single case during a small epidemic in southern India in 1975 (8).

The Union health minister's ego has led to the unceremonious sacking of the director of India's premier institution in the field of medicine.
It is a bitter irony that Sarvesh Kumar died of a chronic heart problem in an institution whose recently-sacked director was one of India's most renowned cardiac specialists.
Technically, the sacking of Dr Venugopal needs the sanction of the Union Cabinet, given that the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences is under the purview of the Government of India.
