All My Sons has often been called a moral play, and it is that, but the concept of morality is not quite as purely ethical as it has been made out to appear, nor is it so in the plays that follow.
That the deed of Joe Keller at issue in All My Sons is his having been the cause of the death of pilots in the war obscures the other kind of morality in which the play is primarily interested.

Fathers and sons loom large in the early plays of Arthur Miller, both the Pulitzer Prize-winning Death of a Salesman and its gawkier but still punch-packing sibling, All My Sons.
The Kellers' other son, Larry, is MIA and presumed dead by everyone but his mother, who clings to the possibility of his return as if it were a lifeline.
The other sticky wicket -- and the crux of the drama -- is the matter of Ann's father and Joe's former partner, who is in prison for selling cracked airplane cylinder heads to the Army in the midst of the war, something that caused the deaths of 21 American pilots.

In All My Sons, Miller uses the microcosmic Keller family--Chris (Jeffrey Cannata), the idealistic war veteran, and Joe (Will Marchetti), his pragmatic father--to dissect the larger arena of all-American tensions: book learning vs. practicality, idealism vs. self-interest, consumerism vs. compassion.
Speaking from desperate pragmatism ("I was thrown out at the age of 10), the father admits to his son, who is still raw from the utter interdependence of human beings in combat, that he sent imperfect airplane engines to the military, and the two wrench out the gamut of family angst.
