He was in the throes of establishing one of the earliest colleges at the University of Oxford.
It was to be known as the New College of St. Mary de Winton.
In what was to be the final transfer of ownership, the living of Writtle church was handed over in 1399 to the Warden and Fellows of New College Oxford in whose patronage the church has remained to this day.

1364 - April 12,1443), English archbishop, founder of All Souls College, Oxford, was born at Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, in 1363 or 1364.
The first recorded appearance of Henry Chicheley himself is at New College, Oxford, as Checheley, eighth among the undergraduate fellows, in July 1387, in the earliest extant hall-book, which contains weekly lists of those dining in Hall.
He must have come from Winchester College in one of the earliest batches of scholars from that college, the sole feeder of New College, not from St John Baptist College, Winchester, as guessed by Dr William Hunt in the Dict.

Wren continued to keep a room in All Souls when he took up his Professorship at Gresham (he did not as is sometimes stated resign his Fellowship at that point) and throughout his Savilian Professorship.
From 1661 until 1668 Wren's life was based in Oxford, although the Royal Society meant that he had to make occasional trips to London and in 1665 he spent much of the year travelling on the continent to escape the plague.
From 1668 onwards, however, Wren began to spend less time in Oxford and more in London (see his architectural career) and had to be continually reminded of his teaching responsibilities.

The College regards a Senior Research Fellowship as being of comparable academic standing to an Oxford University Professorship, and applicants are expected to have a correspondingly distinguished record of achievement in research.
The primary duty of a Senior Research Fellow is to pursue a programme of advanced study and research in Oxford, approved by the College and at a level of achievement acceptable to it.
Leave of absence is granted on recommendation of the College's Academic Purposes Committee, which may allow Fellows to work away from Oxford for up to one term in six, when this would be beneficial to their programme of study.
