Stiff Little Fingers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stiff Little Fingers are a punk band, originally based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, formed in 1977.
They released some live albums and did the occasional short tour towards the end of the '80s, and by 1990 were thinking of reforming permanently.
The single from this album, Beirut Moon, was banned in Britain because it criticized the government for not acting to free hostage John McCarthy who had been held in the Lebanon.

Jake Burns - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stiff Little Fingers' debut album Inflammable Material entered the UK Charts as the highest new entry and, co-incidentally, the first ever completely independent album on 21st February 1979, which also happened to be Burns' 21st birthday.
The album was met with much critical acclaim and put SLF on the punk rock map with fast politically motivated lyrics regarding the political situation in Northern Ireland at the time.
Stiff Little Fingers still perform today although Jake Burns until recently was the only founding member still present in the line up.

 Stiff Little Fingers, Ruts Reviews
My only real complaint with this reissue is that the original album began perfectly with the explosive "Babylon's Burning", appropriately set off by ringing fire bells; this CD starts off with their first two singles, which are OK, but don't exactly start the proceedings off with a bang.
The Stiff Little Fingers were a band from Northern Ireland who made the "troubles" as people there say, their main subject on their first album.
Stiff Little Fingers have recently reunited to cash in on their glory days, and have released several other subsequent albums in the '90s.

CALL THIS ONE "Stiff Little Fingers and the Curious Case of the Missing Barking Dog." The barking dog is Jake Burns' old voice-the voice that Mighty Mighty Bosstones' Dicky Barrett and Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister still employ.
Stiff Little Fingers' basic take on the subject is the one most sane people would have: that chronic violence, terrorism and military control are ridiculous conditions that must end.
When Stiff Little Fingers started their show at the Bayou last night with the strident, purposeful and breakneck-paced Nobody's Heroes, they were also showing that they're nobody's fools.

Coming in just towards the end of the first wave of punk, Northern Ireland's Stiff Little Fingers were as politically conscious as any of their peers, but considerably more melodic than many punk bands.

The Best Artists of the 20th Century
The best artists get in a "zone" when they create a string of classic albums that unmistakably define their essence.
I did my best to include some of the artists from the first half of the century who relied on the significantly shorter 78 RPM records, and the prolific songwriters whose works are scattered all over the place, like Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer and Kurt Weill.
Due to untimely death, bad luck, or maybe an artist was only inspired for one album's worth of material and never lived up to their promise, there are a significant number of artists who released single albums or collections that are essential classics that deserve honorable mention.

Prior to becoming Stiff Little Fingers, Jake Burns, Vocals and Guitar, Henry Cluney, Guitar, Gordon Blair, Bass, and Brian Faloon, Drums, were playing in a cover band, Highway Star, in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

A taut, explosive Belfast-based punk band, Stiff Little Fingers (named after a Vibrators song) had the dubious distinction of being referred to as "The Irish Clash." What must have seemed like a compliment at the time did little to help their career, only because it made comparisons between the two bands inevitable.
Stiff Little Fingers, on the other hand, were simply a very good punk rock band.
After that, SLF released a handful of pretty good records (including a terrific live album, Hanx), but their unregenerate fast and loud punk style started to sound stale.

Blasting out of Belfast during the second wave of British punk Stiff Little Fingers were never the most sophisticated band of the era but they almost certainly one of the angriest.
Most of the time it is nothing but an intoxicating success, with the best numbers representing anthems of anger and synonymous with the outrage that comes from living in a city that is savaged by a minority of, at best, bullies and at worst murderers and psychopaths.
The highlight on the album, though, is the rip-roaring intro to "Wasted Life" with Burns sounding like he's just started a fight in an empty room and is looking for another one.

Still Little Fingers were, however, proven musicians and although strictly a cover band, they found work aplenty on the pub/club scene.
The first single taken from the album Beirut Moon was immediately banned in the UK (it criticised the UK government for their refusal to act to free the then hostage John McCarthy, held in Lebanon).
Considered weak compared to earlier albums, it was enough to feed old and new fans who were starved for new SLF material.

The Stiff Little Fingers have raged against everything from Northern Ireland to the music business.
So it is that seminal Irish band Stiff Little Fingers was solidified in the pantheon of important musical figures, with a movie scene wherein a painfully timid record store clerk uses the band's "Suspect Device" to woo a love interest.
Formed in Belfast in 1977 and named after a Vibrators song, the Stiff Little Fingers originally had the simple goals of having fun and making music.

The Stranglers have made fifteen albums since forming in 1974, fearlessly experimenting album to album while always maintaining their distinctive sound characterized by Dave Greenfield’s swirling keyboards, J.J. Burnel’s beefy bass and Hugh Cornwell’s one of a kind voice that snarls as easily as it croons.

Belfast's Stiff Little Fingers began as four exciting (if narrow-minded) sloganeers, led by raw-voiced singer/guitarist Jake Burns.
SLF's debut (the Rough Trade label's first LP release) includes such classic protest punk as "Suspect Device," "Alternative Ulster" and "Wasted Life." The LP is generally regarded as a classic punk LP; its UK chart success was the spark that set off a second wave of new bands like the Ruts and Undertones.
The Peel Sessions album replaces the '86 Peel EP, as it combines all four songs from it with sessions from '78, '79 and '80.
