Hush (Buffy episode) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The episode is notable, thus, for the actors succeeding in expressing the storyline without using words, and for its "background" music — Christophe Beck mentions, on DVD interviews, that he thoroughly enjoyed the task of writing the episode's soundtrack; one scene also uses Camille Saint-Saëns's "Danse Macabre" to somewhat melodramatic effect.
In the expository scene, part-way through the episode, it becomes apparent that the only way to defeat The Gentleman is a real human scream, so the focus turns to how Buffy can regain her voice.
That the episode is all about communication is highlighted when Buffy and Riley sit down to talk about their feelings for each other and their respective secrets, once The Gentlemen have been vanquished, and they sit in uncomfortable silence until the credits start.

BBC - Cult - Buffy - Episode Guide - All the Way
One group of demons blends into another after a while but there was something refreshing about the 'Buffy versus the vampires' fight, and not just that Giles got to knock a few heads this time.
This episode was almost shaping up to be Sunnydale-enders for the first half, but then the old Buffy magic kicked in with a great vamp fight scene full of sharp one-liners and perfect pratfalls.
Once again Buffy works well when it plays up to the trappings of the horror film genre and turns them on their heads - the creepy old guy in the scary old house - with the laughs not coming at the expense of the tension.

Maybe one of the things we learned in this episode is that Gunn, at least on the surface, is pretty much as he's always been: A guy who's got major beef with vampires, takes no crap from people, and does his talking with his fists.

How can it be, then, that a special musical episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" -- an episode that ran some eight minutes over the show's regular runtime, potentially causing riots across the land among fans who didn't set their VCRs to catch the overhang -- should avoid every traditional pratfall of the genre?
But picking apart the technicalities of this "Buffy" episode -- its title was "Once More, With Feeling" -- is the best way to miss the point of how beautifully it worked, how gracefully paced, clever and affecting it was.

Joss Whedon | Buffy the Vampire Slayer | tv : ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
A funny thing happened on the way to this week's episode of ''Buffy the Vampire Slayer.'' Although TV's cult hit has always been a genre-busting anomaly -- combining elements of horror, gothic romance, soap opera, satire, and slapstick -- you could be fairly certain the characters wouldn't break into song.
It had to be organic.'' Whedon's hesitation was twofold: He wanted the episode to be ''a normal hour of 'Buffy''' that forwarded existing plot points, not an out-of-sequence stand-alone.
