 King Solomon's Mines Dvd
The film begins with a bang, literally, as we see Allan Quartermain (Granger) leading a hunting expedition whose prey is elephants (if you don't want to see a couple of pachyderms taken down, then fast forward or skip this film altogether...I was put off by it at first, but managed to get past it).
His main role seemed to be to provide a linkage between Elizabeth and Allan, forwarding their characters, but not his own.
As he contemplates retiring, an opportunity to make a heaping wad of cash comes in the form of wealthy Englishwoman Elizabeth Curtis (Kerr), along with her brother John Goode (Carlson) to lead an expedition to search for Elizabeth's husband, who is lost in the jungles as he searched for the fabled King Solomon's mines.

The DVD Journal Quick Reviews: King Solomon's Mines (1950)
But Elizabeth Curtis (Deborah Kerr) wants to know what happened to her adventurer husband, who disappeared while seeking the fabled, titular diamond mines — so she and her brother (Richard Carlson) offer Quartermain a large amount of money to lead a dangerous expedition into uncharted regions of the Kalahari Desert.
Considering that the packaging trumpets this Oscar-winner (for Color Cinematography and Editing) as one of Turner Classic Movies' "Classic Films You Wanted on DVD," it's especially egregious that this beloved film was trotted out with the bare minimum of clean-up.
Filmed on location in Africa using local tribesmen as extras, KSM offered audience of the day an exotic glimpse of the landscape and people of the Congo region long before cable television made the Discovery Channel a household staple.

Allan R. Andrews can be contacted at allan.andrews@reporters.net
David Carlson, a journalism professor at the University of Florida, told Rhoades that he was eager to learn shorthand when he was a young reporter, but his editors frowned on his suggestion that they let him study stenography.
To be sure, my Gregg by that time was not the same shorthand I mastered in high school stenography class, and I had long forgotten most of the business-oriented brief-forms we were required to memorize, but I had developed my own hybrid Gregg with a mix of Speedwriting and abbreviations.

The Family as The Fundamental Unit of Society; Allan Carlson
It is time to move this view of the family as the fundamental social unit to the very heart of international deliberations, so that it might guide the creation of laws and public policies in our respective nations.
For most of the human record here on earth, to say that "the family is the fundamental unit of society" would be to say something unexceptional, or obvious: the equivalent of saying "the sky is blue" or "waves crash on the seashore."
