Allan Clarke (footballer) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Allan Clarke (born July 31, 1946 in Short Heath, Derbyshire) was one of English football's greatest goalscorers who shot to fame in the much-admired and feared Leeds United team of the 1970s.
Clarke scored 26 goals in his first season (and earned the predatory nickname "Sniffer", which stuck throughout his career) as Leeds chased a dream "treble" of League championship, FA Cup and European Cup though ultimately they won nothing.
Clarke was again Leeds' top scorer as he finally earned a title medal in 1974 as Leeds sauntered to the crown on a record run of 29 opening matches without defeat.

 United Greats - Allan Clarke
Allan was a promising 21 -year-old playing with Fulham back in 1968 where his goalscoring ability - he totted up 45 goals in 85 appearances for the Craven Cottage club -impressed sufficiently to bring the then Old Trafford manager Matt Busby and his assistant jimmy Murphy to London in search of Clarke's signature.
At that time Clarke had been selected to play for the England Under-23s against the England side at Highbury and he was then told that Leicester had come in and matched the £150,000 offer made by Manchester United.
Unfortunately, as United were striving to rebuild and become a force again, Clarke could not bring his former club the success they craved and after they went down to the Second Division in 1982, Clarke was not given any time to rebuild and Eddie Gray was appointed as his successor.

Leeds still needed a point from their final games of the season at West Bromwich to stay in the First Division but lost 2-0, Clarke paid the price and was then replaced by Eddie Gray who became player-manager.
This was a difficult time for the club, due to loss of form and subsequently low attendances at Elland Road the club had to seel expensive players who earned big money, for relatively small sums and during 1982-3, United lost £1.5 million and were £2 million in debt.
But Eddie Gray's youth policy stemmed the tide and a profit of £196,000 was recorded, although his young team were eliminated from the FA Cup by Allan Clarke's Third Division Scunthorpe.
