Combustible Celluloid film review - Heidi (1937), Allan Dwan, Shirley Temple, Jean Hersholt, dvd review
Shirley Temple once cited Allan Dwan (along with John Ford) as her favorite director.
Dwan might have been considered one of the greatest filmmakers of the studio era, in a league with Ford, Hawks and Lang, if not for the fact that he was credited on more than 200 films and was rumored to have worked in some capacity on about 250 more.
Granted, most of these films were made during the silent era, and most were one and two-reelers, and his output during the sound era was relegated to low-budget genre flicks.

ToxicUniverse.com - Allan Dwan - 1949 - Sands of Iwo Jima Movies Review
Before the non-sanctioned Vietnam flicks (and before Saving Private Ryan), Hollywood once sanitized its war movies to conform to military standards that showed little realism and promoted American notions of heroism (along with stereotypical plots and wooden acting).
Allan Dwan’s film only rises above the mundane formula due to John Wayne’s excellent performance as the flawed Sergeant John N. Stryker.
Filmed at Camp Pendleton near San Diego, Sands of Iwo Jima begins with the hard-nosed Stryker training new marines in New Zealand for the island-hopping battles to come.

 Slightly Scarlet (Allan Dwan)
Rhonda Fleming and Arlene Dahl play sisters who share some sort of duplicitous secret from childhood.
Director Alan Dwan (who replaced Kurt Neumann for this film) makes sure we appreciate the doppelgangerishness of the actresses from the opening scene--Fleming picks up Dahl as she exits prison and the two embrace in that movie-ish way, cheek-to-cheek, so their striking similarity of features and RED HAIR can be fully displayed.
Fleming really could act, and she gets some choice scenes, but Dahl tends to steal most of Fleming's thunder with her pouty, Dorothy Malone-like, bad girl characterization.
