Water regimes in many cases are completely altered due to the use of lakes and streams for the supply of irrigation water (DCNR, 1990; Allan and Lovett, 1997).
The water regime of this lake is also managed for the purposes of reducing surface salinisation, to encourage tree regeneration and for the provision of waterbird breeding and feeding habitat (Jensen, 1994).

An Interview with David Allan and Brian Richter, "Tending the Rivers" , eJournal USA: Global Issues, June 2005
David Allan is a professor of conservation biology and ecosystem management at the University of Michigan and co-author of Streams: Their Ecology and Life.
Water problems risk the health of fish populations, for instance, or the water purification capacity of the aquatic ecosystem; or the health of the riparian ecosystem, the streamside vegetation and trees that live along the stream and have roots in the shallow ground water.
Just to mention the valuable uses of fresh water is breathtaking if you run down the list—the water we have for drinking, for domestic use, for agriculture and industry, for employment, and to support healthy fish populations that are an important source of protein, and so on.

Liquid assets: water in the Middle East, by Brian Whitaker, July 2001
Its "virtual water" imports, in the form of grain during the mid-1990s, were equivalent to the flow of the river Nile into Egypt.
Water, for everyone in the Middle East, is a highly sensitive issue - not least because it is so closely related to the food supply.
Logically, says Allan, the first priority is to bring the issue into the open and secure supplies of virtual water - since there is no other way to make up the deficit - through international food agreements.

 A Convenient solution.
This partially explains why in the United Arab Emirates desalinated water is either piped kilometres to reach farms in the desert or soil is actually moved from one area to another to build new farms for greater food self-sufficiency.
The plan is to pump water from deep wells in the north of the country and then send it through underground pipes to irrigate about 200,000 hectares along the Mediterranean coast at an estimated capital cost of $25 billion.
But consider the case of Egypt, where about 90 per cent of the national water budget goes to agriculture and yet another 7.5 million tonnes of grain, equivalent to 7.5 billion cubic metres of virtual water, were still imported last year to feed the population of about 63 million.

The river waters slow down upon entering the Allenwaters lake system but as waters bunch up going around islands, points of land and shoals they quicken again and scour and constantly remove the silt from the gravel bottoms.
Because of the acres and acres of exposed gravel around the islands, point and shoals, a constant supply of the nutrients from both the Allanwater River and the Brightsands river are distributed to the acres of spawning areas.
Growth is normally slower in northerly latitudes where water temperatures are colder or food sources are not as plentiful or colder waters reduce the amount of energy that can be summoned by any individual fish in a given day.
