In the News (Sun 20 Dec 09)

Allanite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Allanite is a sorosilicate group of minerals within the broader epidote group that contain a significant amount of rare earth elements.
Also highly radioactive grains of allanite often have their structure disrupted or are metamict.
Allanite is usually fl in color, but can be brown to brown-violet.

Allanite coexists with garnet, omphacite, phengite, quartz (ex coesite) and rutile in eclogites and with and garnet, kyanite, phengite, quartz (ex coesite) and rutile in metasediments in agreement to parageneses produced in the experiments.
The stability of allanite to unexpectedly high temperature and high pressure has important consequences for the composition of fluids/melts generated in the presence of allanite because allanite buffers the LREE contents of these melts.
Allanite is stable at higher temperatures than the dehydration of phengite (Figure 1) which is an important water reservoir in subducted oceanic crust.

 ALLANITE Chapter16. Sorosilicates and cyclosilicates
Most Franklin allanite occurs as fl, euhedral, bladed crystals embedded in green to whitish-green microcline; much of this material was found on the Trotter Dump, and inferior specimens are still abundant (Figure 16-2).
The local abundance of this material indicates that the solutions from which allanite and microcline formed were relatively rich in Ce.
Palache (1935) mentioned the occurrence of allanite on the dumps of the local nearby iron mines; this material has not been studied by the writer.

Th-Pb ion-microprobe dating of allanite   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Allanite occurs in regionally metamorphosed pelites and felsic igneous rocks.
Using an ion microprobe to determine allanite ages would have several advantages: mineral separation is not needed, dating of small grains (~15 mm) is feasible, and rock textures are preserved permitting its relationship with other minerals to be assessed.
Because allanite can degrade to an amorphous gel due to the bombardment of a particles emitted by its radioactive constituents, the ion microprobe is also useful because it has the spatial selectivity to analyze small areas on the grains unaffected by alteration.

 Allanite
It is that of a typical allanite, which is a hydrous silicate of aluminum and calcium with more or less iron, manganese, and a few of the rare-earth metals.
Allanite is found at Franklin only in the pegmatite.
In sinking the Trotter shaft on Mine Hill much pegmatite was encountered, and in places, especially where the coarse pegmatite was in contact with either limestone or zinc ore, allanite was abundant.

ALLANITE (Calcium Rare Earth Aluminum Iron Silicate Hydroxide)
Allanite, also known as "orthite" in Europe, is one of the most common rare earth minerals, which is somewhat of an oxymoron.
Embedded crystals of allanite are frequently seen with a "halo" or dark ring; evidence of the radioactive effects on nearby minerals.
Allanite is found as an accessory mineral in several igneous rocks such as granites, syenites, diorites and their pegmatites and in a few metamorphic rocks as small embedded grains.

Small irregularly shaped aplitic allanite pegmatite bodies occurring near the contacts of a larger aplitic body with granodiorite are described.
Allanite represents a considerable pant of the pegmatite, is equally distributed, and can be regarded as a major constituent.
Similar allanite pegmatites recently discovered in the Precambrian gneisses and schists in Clark County, Nevada and San Bernardino County, California are also described.
