Ustad Baba Allauddin Khan (1862-1972) is a legendary figure in Indian music.
The great Wazir Khan of Rampur, scion of the Seni Beenkar Gharana taught him for 12 years.
Among his large number of disciples, the most famous are his son the supreme Sarodist Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and his son-in-law the Sitar Maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Khan began learning music at the age of three and learned it like a child learns language; his older sister Jehanara instructed him in singing, being more advanced, and they learned together before he took instruction alone.
From '38 Ravi Shankar studied under Allauddin Khan in Maihar, and married Annapurna '41, whose reputation on the surbahar (a deeper-voiced, heftier relative of the sitar) is unrivalled (but she has rarely played in public since the '40s- -early '50s when she played jugalbandis or duets in Bombay and Delhi with her then-husband).
Khan contributed to the soundtrack of Satyajit Ray's film Devi '60, one of the first non-Western directors to breach the international film barrier; during that decade Khan was second only to Shankar in Indian fame on the international circuit.

Allauddin Khan was born in Shibpur village in Brahmanbaria, in present-day Bangladesh, the son of Sabdar Hossain Khan, also known as Sadhu Khan.
Khan then became a disciple of Amritalal Dutt, a close relative of Swami Vivekananda and music director at Kolkata's Star Theatre, with the goal of becoming an instrumentalist.
Allauddin was a very religious man, and though Muslim by name, was strongly devoted to the goddess Saraswati, in the form of Sarada Devi, to whom there stands an old and famous temple atop a hill in Maihar.

Ali Akbar Khan was born on April 14, 1922 in the village of Shibpur, Comilla, in present-day Bangladesh, to "Baba" Allauddin Khan and Madina Begum.
Khan became the court musician of the royal family of Jodhpur at the age of 22.
It may be noted here that Khan was the first Indian classical musician to record a television performance in the USA (on Alistair Cooke's "Omnibus", in 1955) In 1956, Khan founded the Ali Akbar College of Music in Calcutta, with the mission to teach and spread Indian classical music.
