It may be derived from the Indian word "Allegawi" or "Allegans" referring to a tribe of so-called "Mound Builders" or from an alternate name for "Cherokee." We do know that Allegan County was organized in 1835, a time of rapid settlement in Michigan.
A small portion of the famous Dutch-American community of Holland is located in the county: the nearby Graafschap Christian Reformed Church, listed on the State Register, is an 116 year old reminder of the area's Dutch presence.
The first people to live in Allegan County were Indians who camped by rivers and lakes swollen with the runoff of the melting glaciers 11,000 years ago.

ALLEGAN -- Allegan County officials initiated an effort they hope will encourage the preservation of farmland in the largely rural county.
The county board unanimously approved the creation of a 12-member committee that will research and put together a draft proposal for a farmland preservation program.
County Commissioner Casey Jones, of Gun Plain Township, emphasized that participation in the program would be strictly up to individual farmers.

   Tribal officials said the casino would greatly benefit Allegan County and Wayland Township, which lost its largest employer when Ampro closed this spring, eliminating 55 jobs.
Almost 3,000 of those jobs would go to Allegan County residents, officials said.
   "Allegan County is dependent on the economics of other areas," he said, noting that the latest U.S. Census Bureau figures show that 48.6 percent of Allegan County residents work outside the county.
