Allegheny Cemetery is one of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's largest, oldest, and most picturesque cemeteries.
Allegheny Cemetery is sited on the north-facing slope of hills above the Allegheny River.
Its design echoes the landscaped garden style of the Mount Auburn Cemetery near Boston, Massachusetts and is considered one of the most beautiful burial grounds in the United States.

As the Chinese died they were buried in a hilltop cemetery and local historians point out that when the last had died their bodies were removed from Beaver Falls and "faithfully and religiously transported to far-off China." In terms of class, the Chinese and the African-Americans were on top of a hill for a reason.
Yet in more formal urban cemeteries such as Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh, the higher spaces were reserved for the mausoleums of industrialists, and the plots on steep hillsides and in valleys were left for often poor ethnic and racial minorities.
While a picnic, a jog or even a wedding in a cemetery might be less out of the ordinary than it was a few years ago, now isn't the first time cemeteries have been used by the living.

 Many trees uprooted at cemeteries hard hit by storm
Established in 1844 as a 100-acre rural cemetery, Allegheny was designed in the romantic, picturesque style by architect John Chislett, who also designed the Butler Street gateway.
In the developed portions of the cemetery, the oldest, biggest and most vulnerable trees are in the oldest sections.
The smaller St. Mary's Cemetery, adjacent to Allegheny, also was hit hard by the storm, although a spokesman couldn't estimate the number of affected trees.

Cemetery President Thomas G. Robert estimates it may take as long as six months or a year to re-open all 300 acres and 15 miles of roadway that snake through the landmark park.
Cemetery officials are negotiating to find a lumber company to clear the large, fallen trees and keep the wood, Roberts said.

These are our favorite Pittsburgh Cemeteries, places we'd go to although no family member is buried there; places we'd walk and ponder the lives the stones represent, places that represent a calmness, serenity.
It is in Homewood that the cemetery section of Bloomsday is read, near the soldiers and the ladies of the Protestant Home for the Aged.
But we go to Allegheny Cemetery, not so much to pay homage at the tomb of some dead millionaire, but to stroll among the angels and spires, the wonderously shaped rock monuments of those ordinary Pittsburghers, who history may never have claimed.
