Allen began learning dance by studying privately with a former dancer from the Ballet Russes and later by moving with her family to Mexico City where she danced with the Ballet Nacional de Mexico.

The following year, when chorus member George Faison left the show to form the Universal Dance Experience, Allen became his principal dancer and assistant.

Allen is one of only two hurricanes in the Atlantic to achieve 190 mph sustained winds, the other being Hurricane Camille.
Allen moved westward at an unusually high speed of 15 to 20 knots, rapidly intensifying into a Category 5 hurricane at 0000 (GMT) on August 5 while south of Puerto Rico and (very unusually) remaining so for over a day.
Allen is one of the few Atlantic hurricanes to reach Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale on three separate occasions, the others being Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Isabel.
