Exclusive Interview: Allan Coulter for "Hollywoodland"
Coulter's first major milestone as a television director came in 1999 with the premiere of the HBO flagship series "The Sopranos" (1999-), which he also produced.
Coulter went on to direct an episode of "Six Feet Under" (HBO, 2001-2005) and the pilot for the gritty drug-trafficking miniseries "Kingpin" (NBC, 2003).
After a two year absence, Coulter returned to HBO in 2005 to direct an episode of the award-winning historical miniseries "Rome" (2005), which graphically chronicled the rise of the Roman Empire.

Director Allen Coulter read the script a year later, and found it to be “smart and incredibly well-written, a tale of two men who want to be someone other than who they are.
Coulter marvels, “Millions of children thought of this man – who was childless in real life – as a father figure who was strong and all-knowing.
Coulter notes, “In several of her movies, Diane Lane has played women who are driven by emotions beyond their control.

But director Allen Coulter, who grew up in College Station, saw something in Affleck that convinced him the actor could portray George Reeves, the star of the 1950s Superman TV series who committed suicide.

Coulter couldn't get the rights to use footage from the TV series, so he had to reshoot those scenes.

indieWIRE: Trivial Pursuit: Allen Coulter's "Hollywoodland"
In creating a dual-pronged plot that moves forward on parallel tracks, Emmy-winning "Sopranos" alum Allen Coulter shortchanges both Ben Affleck's blustery Reeves and Adrien Brody's Louis Simo, the dubious private detective hired by Reeves's mother (Lois Smith) to investigate his death, a bullet to the head that's been filed away as a suicide.
It's both surprising and not, coming from Coulter, whose "Sopranos" background set a precedent for subordinating women within male-centered narratives in a manner that at least allowed their suppressed position to become a point unto itself.
The film's director, Allen Coulter, says that the term "suggests a state of mind," but even as the story embellishes on the mystery surrounding the suicide in 1959 of actor George Reeves, star of the popular 1950s "Superman" television program, it is hardly steeped in enough Americana to justify the director's grandiose pontifications.

 Hollywoodland
Long before it veers off course to become something almost profound, first-timer Allen Coulter, working with a script from newcomer Paul Bernbaum, keeps the film moving briskly between three conventional stories.
He starts with one of those vintage private eye curmudgeons, the sort who hides the fact he has heart, who wears a fl eye as a badge of honor.
Coulter doesn’t up the tension but defuses it, showing us Reeves’ murder as one scenario plays out and then twisting that reality around with version two and version three.

While TV director turned Hollywood director, Allen Coulter’s first feature film falls under a distinct genre and is an altogether more optimistic and different film.
Wilder's 1950 masterpiece is Coulter's new release and more, entering the gothic realm and the more intricately psychological when Hollywoodland seems content in the shallower arena of your typical, straightforward film noir.
Even so, Sunset Boulevard is a terribly hard film to measure up to; and with a stellar cast at its best, top notch cinematography and score, and an almost too-intelligent script, Hollywoodland harkens back to the era it takes place in, a time before superhero epics (but not superheroes) and quick editing.

The mystery of Reeves' death is the subject of "Hollywoodland," written by Paul Bernbaum and directed by Allen Coulter (who has previously directed episodes of "The Sopranos" and "Sex and the City"), although the movie doesn't attempt any definitive answers.
Coulter and Bernbaum blend fact and speculation, with a heavy dose of the latter, to tell the story -- and to map the psyche -- of the charismatic but troubled actor.

Not really, but Coulter gives it a creditable shot—starting with the title, a reference to the famous block-letter sign (it originally had LAND at the end) that's invariably employed as a symbol for dashed dreams.
As in most movies based on real-life events—even accounts as speculative as this one—the tenor is one of diligent competence; in any given scene, you can't help but suspect that far more energy was spent on getting the period detail right than on crafting something original or arresting or thought-provoking.
That leaves just the locations and the actors, plus a little pungent dialogue, which in combination are just sufficient to keep us engaged throughout.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Hollywoodland
In this case, the minor bygone star embroiled in intrigue is George Reeves (Ben Affleck), TV's original Superman who committed suicide in 1959 but, as rumor has it, might have been murdered.
It's a notion director Allen Coulter's whodunit exploits until, failing to posit a convincing foul play scenario, it falls back on inconclusive ambiguity and contrived narrative parallels between its dead subject (seen in flashbacks) and the fictional, skuzzy private investigator Louis Simo (Adrien Brody) hired by Reeves's mother to investigate her son's death.
Unfortunately, without more than the flimsiest of evidence to suggest that something criminal occurred, the overriding result is simply that every character's motives are disingenuously cast in doubt for dramatically suspenseful purposes.

Sweeping precariously close to L.A. Confidential (1997) and Auto Focus (2002) as well as several hundred other recent biopics, Allen Coulter's Hollywoodland nevertheless manages a flavor of its own.
Via the title, Coulter thematically connects Simo and Reeves, drawing them both into a make-believe world in which -- thanks to cinematic images -- people can imagine themselves better than they are.
Coulter, who makes his feature debut after a career in television ("Sex and the City," "The Sopranos," etc.), does a remarkable job with his actors and with period sets and clothes.
