The Music Show - 20/07/2002: Allen Forte
Allen Forte is well-known to music students across the world as an analyst of music, of tonal music and atonal music, one of the great pioneers of set theoretical analysis.
Allen Forte: When he reached that low B-flat, he was playing I guess a step higher, when he reached that low note, he was very expressive right there, that was a very nice touch.
Allen Forte: Well in simple language, the songs have demonstrated that they survive over a period of many years with all these performance variables that you mentioned taking place, they don’t disappear, they’re not connected irrevocably with the particular era.

NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Schenkerian analysis   (Site not responding. Last check: )
According to Allen Forte, "Schenker's major concept is not that of the Ursatz, as it is sometimes maintained, but that of structural levels, a far more inclusive idea." Schenker called these levels Schichten.
While contemporary authors such as Forte and Beach present Schenker's analysis as a process of reducing a composition to an Ursatz, Schenker himself saw analysis as generating from the premise of an Ursatz (see Snarrenberg 1997).
For example, he suggests that the properties described as natural phenomenon by Schenker be considered axioms and he also formulated a system to compose twelve-tone music that was "equally intricate and fruitful." Allen Forte also responded to Schenker by providing an alternative system applicable to the analysis of nontonal nontwelve tone music.

Forte has also introduced the concept of set theory in music, published a widely used music theory textbook, and trained a cadre of enthusiastic theorists who have taken up the Fortean call and marched forward with his methodology into the twenty–first century.
According to Forte’s introduction to The American Popular Ballad, he expects the reader to be able to read music notation and have knowledge of the basic nomenclature associated with harmony and music theory.
Forte also introduces the fundamentals of harmony and the most frequently encountered chord types in this repertoire: the major and minor chords, the major and minor seventh chords, the dominant seventh chord, the half-diminished seventh chord, and “added-note” chords.

 printarticle.
The layout of Forte's book is broadly chronological, beginning with songs of the 1920s, ending in the 1940s, and with mostly famous examples coming under the author's microscope.
Forte begins by explaining that it's a long song, by which he doesn't mean that it lasts seven or eight minutes, but that the melodic line is long, the first paragraph of the tune lasting the standard 32 bars all on its own.
There are dozens more felicitous observations in Forte's analysis of this song (for example, the largest melodic leap comes, paradoxically, on the words "lips meet"), and there are hundreds more like it in the book.

Forte raises the concern that the canons of the future may not be based upon discriminating criteria but upon the career possibilities they present.
Forte concludes by voicing the hope that "job attainment leading to tenure is not a major motivation for exploring music outside the canon, taking precedence over the intrinsic interest of the musical artifact" [4.5].

One reason Forte's appointments are being closely watched is the MFD's disastrous performance in minority hiring during the period in which he was Dickinson's assistant chief.
As for Forte's appointment of James Rodger, Herron--who as recently as last October claimed the city "had a moral obligation of fairness" to aggressively pursue the issue of American Indian verification--says he won't challenge the chief's move.
Forte, meanwhile, is quick to say, "I respect Chief Dickinson and I have always supported Chief Dickinson." And it bears noting that on his first day as chief 15 years ago, Dickinson, too, said he was "pledged to recruit and hire minority and women firefighters."

Sam Goody: Sophisticated Comedy - Broadway Danny Rose Woody Allen / PG / 1984
A smaller, amusing comedy from writer/director Woody Allen, Broadway Danny Rose begins with a bunch of show business vets sitting around a table at New York's Carnegie Deli and reminiscing about the legendary titular character, a loser of an agent who would represent anyone, including blind xylophonists, piano-playing birds, and has-been crooners with drinking problems.
Allen plays Rose as a befuddled, warm-hearted schlub who finally has a shot at getting somewhere when he signs washed-up lounge singer Lou Canova (Nick Apollo Forte) and nearly brings his career back to life.
Allen, Forte, and especially Farrow all do strong work with characters that could have easily become stereotypes, and the film has a lighter, warmer touch than the Allen films that preceded it (Stardust Memories and Zelig).

Forte at least pretends to want to explain his subject clearly, and the book has just hundreds of examples; but I'm afraid I hardly understood a single one of them.
Forte paints full Schenkerian grafts, before you even know what half of those silly lines and phrasing markes mean, and example after example I found my poor self asking: why this way, and not that way?
