Allen Ludden (October 5, 1917 – June 9, 1981) was an American television presenter and game show host.
Ludden hosted many game shows, including the G.E. College Bowl, but he was most famous for hosting both the daytime and primetime versions of Password on CBS and ABC from 1961 to 1975.
Ludden, a Roman Catholic, was a widower with three children – his wife Margaret McGloin had died in 1961 – when he proposed to the twice-divorced Betty White, whom he had met on Password, at least twice before she accepted, and they were happily married from June 14, 1963 until Ludden's death.

One of the favorite parts of the show was the final minute, when Ludden would note "The Password for today is…" and then note a word that was sent in by a home audience member, along with a clever phrase or definition.
Ludden returned thinner but still at the top of his game, not revealing that he was suffering from cancer and the surgery hadn’t totally solved the problem.

There is simply no other way to describe Allen Ludden other than class act; even now, just looking at the guy, both on Password and Password Plus as well as when he popped up as a guest on Match Game.
But to a lonely, always-reading kid who still reads everything, Allen Ludden was the friendly, bright guy who not only helped me build a vocabulary but passed it on to viewers with class and warmth.
When Allen Ludden passed on, I learned that Tom Kennedy and Bert Convy showed that "Password" could be a fun, peppy game show like many of the shows of today try to be.

It is true that Allen Ludden had signs of health trouble as early of the first few weeks of Password Plus and please post the timeline of events that happened at led to him leaving the show for 4 weeks and for good in 10/80 and to his death.
Originally when Allen complained about stomach pains, they thought it was due to him leaning on the podium when he gave the passwords to the civilian contestants so they cut out part of the podium to help him.
One note that after Allen was off of P+ for good after his stroke, he did some voice-over work for commercials and such.

Bill Cullen filled in for Allen while Allen was hospitalized for a month in 1980.
Allen returned for a few months afterwards, but then became too ill to continue (after suffering a massive heart attack) and Tom Kennedy took over in October 1980 as permanent host.

The result was a year and a half that Allen would have been proud of, as Tom showed himself to be competent and able in the role he was suddenly thrust into, and keeping the show as cheerful as possible despite the sadness backstage.
He opened his first episode with a dedication to the ailing emcee, gave periodic updates to the home viewer about how Allen's recuperation was going, and on a few occasions (such as the French blooper) even directly addressing Allen when looking at the camera.

We do have two long-running examples of hosts dying during the show's run: Jack Barry and TJW and Allen Ludden and P+(though Ludden left P+ due to health reasons eight months before his death).
Ludden, on the other had, you have a little more of a point, although I suggest that SP is to be considered a different animal because there WAS that time off the air to realize that Allen was no longer with us and that someone else would be hosting the new show.
And I also think the fact that the show didn't last all that much longer under Kennedy is telling as well.
