		Tobacco cards were all the rage in the 1880s, but their pre-sports "girlie" theme was infuriating to many women and became a "cause" for those who considered themselves morally upright.
		Allen & Ginter of Richmond, Virginia, was one of the first.
		The N-28 Allen and Ginter set of "The World Champions" can be collected as a ten-card baseball set, a six-card Hall of Fame set, or as a 50-card set of sports stars.

		Ginter came to Richmond when he was 18 years old, having previously visited during business travels in the South with an uncle.
		Ginter went into banking and brokerage and prospered, but when the crash of 1873 came, he lost his fortune, allegedly due to the incompetence of a partner.
		Ginter dammed the stream to make a lake, built a trolley line from the city, created a nine-hole golf course and a small zoo.

		John F. Allen, Major Lewis Ginter, and John Pope were the heads of the Allen & Ginter tobacco company from the mid 1870's through the 1880's.
		Most of these sets of cards didn't identify a particular brand, but were labeled "Allen & Ginter's Cigarettes." A redeemable coupon was also inserted into each cigarette pack.
		Beautiful albums that usually pictured all of the cards from one of the different sets, were sent to smokers in exchange for 75 to 100 coupons.

		The Civil War was to see Ginter as a successful businessman but he enlisted in the quartermaster corps.
		There is also strong evidence that Major Ginter also created the cigarette card (and certainly the earliest known UK cigarette card was from a packet of Richmond Gems).
		Everyone is allowed one mistake but Major Ginter may have made another when Duke approached Ginter in 1889 (by now Duke had cornered about a third of the market) with the suggestion of a merger.

	Sports Trading/Collect Cards: 2006 Topps Allen & Ginter
		As a 60 year old I'm interested in the 50's cards of my childhood but my interest in modern cards has been ignited by the Allen & Ginter cards recently released by Topps.
		I guess it's because the Allen & ginter is loaded with a lot of potentially valuable inserts and parallels.
		I don't think that any collector would even imagine a chrome set of the American Pie cards and I would not foresee the Allen and Ginter cards going that route either.
