Allentown is 60 miles (95 km) north of Philadelphia, the fifth largest city in the United States, and 90 miles (145 km) west of New York City, the largest city.
Historically, the population of Allentown increased from 25,288 in 1890; to 35,416 in 1900; to 51,913 in 1910; to 73,502 in 1920; and to 96,904 in 1940.
Allentown had been home to the Allentown Ambassadors, an independent baseball team, who played their home games at Allentown's Bicentennial Park from their founding in 1997 until the team was folded in 2003.

 Fluoridation Study Proposed, But Defeated
Even though Allentown has been debating the merits of fluoridation for more than 40 years, Tropiano plans to introduce a bill establishing a three-month investigative panel to determine the costs and benefits of fluoridation.
In a separate move, Hershman collected the signatures of 35 registered Allentown voters to use a provision of the city's 1997 Home Rule Charter to secure time on council's agenda to plead for a fluoridation study similar to Tropiano's.
Allentown might have to put on hold the plan to add fluoride to its drinking water that City Council approved Jan. 20.

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday to determine the cause of death, team spokesman Sean Aronson said.
Bauldree, who began his professional career in 1995 in the Atlanta Braves' organization, was in his second season with the Ambassadors.

Acutally the local politicians (the Allentown mayor especially) were pulling for a new ballpark for the NeL club and refused to deal with the affiliated group.
This likely had something to do with the Allentown owner being a political supporter but it was what happened.
As for Allentown, they just lost a team that was superior in quality than any short season single-A team they can land.

When Allentown Ambassadors owner Peter Karoly announced in early May that the Ambassadors were declaring bankruptcy and folding, the Northeast League was suddenly left with the need for a traveling team to fill out the schedule.
And as an added hurdle, the bankruptcy proceedings meant that none of the Ambassadors' assets--equipment, uniforms, even the players signed by the Ambassadors--could be used by the Northeast League.
While the players on the Ambassadors' roster were originally stuck to the now-defunct team, a court ruling in mid-May freed the Ambassadors to sell contracts and waive players.
