Profiles 55 - The Alley Oop Formula (Mar 2002)
Alley Oop combined the loud, the funny, the handsomely-rendered, and bizarrely juxtaposed all in a package difficult for the reader to put down.
If, crippled by gallantry, Oop tended to crumble when confronted with the wrath of a real or prospective belle, however, he observed few social niceties in acting out his displeasure with what rivals dared to attempt to lure the affections of a love object away from Oop and onto themselves.
Oop feared not to lay one well-depicted tomahawk upside the lantern-jaw of whatever beaux might demonstrate poor enough judgment to attempt to compete with him on the fields of romance.

Alley Oop imitates the format and re-creates in oil much of the material effect of a particular Johns painting in encaustic, which exists in two comparatively large versions: Flag on Orange Field, 1957 and 1958.
The relatively small scale of Alley Oop is determined by its collaged element, part of a page of comics; unlike an image of a flag, convertible to any size, this sheet of cartooning was designed to be held in the hand.
Everything about Alley Oop seems matter-of-fact and casual, from the cardboard support, with its loosely layered strokes of orange, occasional scratches, and encrustations, to the collaged comic, with its dense array of primary hues, flesh tones, and bare spots.
