Allgemeine-SS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Allgemeine-SS was the name for the "General SS" which consisted of part-time mustering SS formations created under the Nazi Party between 1925 and 1945.
Both the Allgemeine and Waffen-SS used the same SS ranks, but maintained different criteria for promotion.
In 1944, all Allgemeine-SS Generals were granted equivalent Waffen-SS General rank in the event that they were captured by the Allies and would therefore be granted status as POWs instead of police officials.

 The German SS/Waffen-SS in WWII
The Allgemeine-SS (General SS) was the main branch of this overwhelmingly complex organization, and it served a politicial and administrative role.
The SS was in reality a complex political and military organization made up of three separate and distinct branches, all related but equally unique in their functions and goals.
The SS was in fact not a monolithic "Black Corps" of goose stepping Gestapo men, as is often depicted in popular media and in many third rate historical works.

Speer recognized that the SS was motivated by the desire for further profits when he suggested to Hitler that the SS receive a share of the war equipment produced by concentration camp labor in ratio to the working hours of the prisoners.
The SS, so far as I know, is the only organization which played a part in the concentration camp picture, except at the very end of the war when I think, as Colonel Storey said yesterday, some members of the SA were also involved as guard personnel of concentration camps.

Andrew Mollo gives the student of uniforms a most valuable reference tool in examing the Allgemeine (General) SS.
The multi-volume work of Andrew Mollo on the uniforms of the SS remains the single best treatment of the subject in the English language, not the least because of the extensive use of footnotes to acquaint the reader with his sources.
The sole exception to this generalization is the work of the mid-1980s of John Angolia on cloth SS insignia and the recent work on camouflaged uniforms of the W-SS.
