The world of Firefly was unlike anything that television had ever seen before - a western set in space, with no aliens and very few technological wonders.
Firefly had a very earthy feeling, drawing on motifs from traditional wild west pictures and focusing on a small band of pirates.
Firefly was broadcast on the FOX network, but was cancelled after only eleven of the fourteen produced episodes were aired due to poor viewing numbers.

Alliance (Firefly) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Alliance flag, seen in the original pilot episode, is a blending of the United States and People's Republic of China flags (two versions of this flag, one with 13 stripes and one with five stripes, appear in the series).
Generally, the Alliance is rather authoritarian, although Joss Whedon, the series' creator, has said this is at least partly due to the fact that the show is seen from the viewpoint of those hostile to the Alliance.
Alliance ground troops are nicknamed "purple bellies" (in contrast to the Independent "browncoats").

Firefly is a science fiction television series that premiered in the United States and Canada on 2002-09-20.
The star system is governed by the Alliance, an organization of "core" planets that has succeeded in forcibly unifying all of the colonies under a single government.
This Sino-American (named the Anglo-Sino Alliance) allegiance is supported by close examination of labels on the crates from the episode "The Train Job", where crates of Alliance goods are marked with a Chinese flag superimposed over a United States flag.

Reavers are a group of humans in the television series Firefly and the movie Serenity who live on the fringes of civilized space and have become animalistic.
Their existence is officially denied by the Alliance, but they are a brutal reality around the outer planets.
In the climax of the film, a massive space battle between the Alliance and the Reavers occurs, and it is implied that the Alliance fleet wins the battle.

Unification War - The Firefly and Serenity Database   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The Unification war was a war fought between the Alliance and Independents, the core planets had taken much of the system resources and technology and left the outer planets to fend for themselves.
(Alliance troops were nicknamed 'purple bellies' due to the coloring of their own armor.) One of the reasons they were formed was to attempt and prevent the alliance from creating "better" (submissed) and more peaceful people.
The faction was created when the core worlds formed the Alliance and declared war on any planets that resisted efforts to unify the rest of the planets under their control (thus the name Unification War).

Joss Whedon's "Firefly," which premiered two weeks ago on Fox, has the distinction of being both one of the most anticipated shows of the season and one of the strangest.
The first distinction is based on Whedon's cult status as the creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its spin-off, "Angel," both of which are widely recognized as two of the most enterprising and original shows of the past half-decade.
"Firefly" is set 500 years in the future, six years after a war to unite the planets has been won by a totalitarian government, the Alliance.

 Firefly - The TV IV
The basic plot of Firefly was that Earth, or "Earth-That-Was", had been drained dry of resources and mankind had reached out to the stars, colonizing a series of planets.
At some point, the Alliance decided to unite all the colonies under one totalitarian banner.
Some colonies objected to this, and there was a bloody conflict between Alliance forces and the Independent freedom fighters.

Firefly follows Serenity's crew as they struggle to survive on the fringes of colonized space, where the influence of the totalitarian Alliance is tenuous.
Firefly was its own show, and trying to sqeeze Whedon's quite clever attempt at a new kind of TV story into established (and largely failed) molds was foolish and futile.
Firefly might have stood a chance if the folks in charge of programming had taken it for what it was, looked at its potential to draw new viewers who might just be bored with standard cheap-ass sci-fi TV nonsense, and gather a little popular momentum to match the already significant critical buzz.

DVD Verdict Review - Firefly: The Complete Series
Firefly: The Complete Series contains a two-part pilot and 12 regular episodes spread out over four discs, packaged in a format I wish would be standard for multi-disc sets—four individual plastic mini-cases housed inside a cardboard box.
Whedon is too diplomatic to fully vent his frustration, but the more he reveals of Firefly's cruel studio treatment (Fox was apparently expecting a light comedy along the lines of…Buffy, which it apparently believed was a sitcom), the more evident it becomes that everyone involved with this series was royally screwed.
Firefly doesn't feature a particularly broad color palette—it's mostly sepia-tinged, with lots of browns and tans, and when it's not sepia it's gunmetal gray—but its limited palette is beautifully rendered.

Firefly takes place in a multi-cultural future, where the divide between the rich and poor is great.
The show's plot pits these characters against various criminals and schemers, Alliance security forces, the utterly psychotic and brutal Reavers, and the mysterious men with "hands of blue" who are apparently operatives of a secret agency which is part of the megacorporation referred to in the DVD commentary only as The Blue Sun Corporation.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Firefly: The Complete Series
A complicated — and expensive-to-produce — show, the creators describe Firefly's premise thusly: "Five hundred years in the future, there is a whole new frontier, and the crew of the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity is eager to stake a claim on the action.
Now they find themselves on the run, desperate to steer clear of Alliance ships and the flesh-eating Reavers who live on the fringes of space." The show's universe is a solar system full of Earth-like planets that have been colonized by humans.
Firefly essentially is a western with laser pistols replacing Colt.45s and the crew of the Serenity traveling throughout the aforementioned new frontier pulling the sci-fi equivalent of bank and train robberies (one episode is, in fact, titled "The Train Job") while creating a rag-tag family of miscreants and outlaws.

“Firefly” is one of the best television dramas of the past decade, and is worthy of being lumped together with the group of new shows (like “24,” “The Shield,” and “Alias”) that gave tired viewers a reason to watch television again.
The cast and crew of “Firefly” have poured their heart and soul into bringing this beloved series to DVD, and if the bonus material is any indication, then you’ll see what I mean.
It’s a real shame that “Firefly” was never given the chance to survive network syndication, but you would think that a cable channel like Sci-Fi would have picked up the option to continue producing more episodes.

Firefly pushes the characters forward with every episode, and by the time you get to the end of episode 13, it's a little disappointing to find it comes screaming to a halt.
The only real qualm I have with Firefly is that at only 13 episodes, there just isn't enough time to do the plot justice, but with a relatively large cast, and a big story to tell, something was bound to suffer.
