Alliance Party of Northern Ireland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alliance expressly aimed to act as a bridge between the Protestant and Catholic sections of the community, with a secondary goal of attracting support from Northern Ireland's Jewish community and its small but steadily growing Asian (Chinese, Indian, Pakistani) population, the vast majority of which are neither Catholic nor Protestant.
The Party's founding principles were expressly in favour of Northern Ireland remaining part of the United Kingdom, although in contrast to the Unionist parties, this was expressed in socio-economic rather than ethnic terms.
Alliance was seriously damaged by the IRA Hunger Strike of 1981, which deeply polarised Northern Ireland politics, and indirectly led to the emergence of Sinn Féin as a serious political force.

On December 8, the party was officially registered with Elections Canada, and on March 20, 2004, former Alliance leader Stephen Harper was elected as leader of the new party.

The New Party Alliance - Dr.Fulani's Snake-Oil Show   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The New Alliance Party has long been controversial, thanks largely to its practice of recruiting members through group psychotherapy and to its alliances, over the years, with figures as diverse as the neo-fascist Lyndon LaRouche and the Rev. Al Sharpton.
In fact, the alliance between political and psychological countercultures was almost certain, sooner or later, to produce a Fred Newman: someone who could join the human potential movement's appeal to desperate and isolated individuals eager for a quick fix and instant community with emotionally resonant outward symbols of social justice.
The party's raison d'etre is twofold: to massage constantly the egos of its otherwise marginal leadership, particularly Newman and secondarily Fulani; and to keep supporters convinced that something important is occurring every minute, to allow not a moment to pass in which doubt might enter.

President Chen Shui-bian's plan to forge a "majority alliance" in the divided Legislature drew mixed reactions in the domestic political arena yesterday.
Some analysts said it's already too late to form an alliance of lawmakers, but others said Chen stands a good chance of succeeding in organizing such an alliance as the strength of the opposition camp has been weakened over intraparty squabbling.
Chen said the proposal to form a "majority alliance" is aimed at creating a platform for rational cross-party dialogue and cooperation, not at fanning inter-party confrontation.

The Farmers' Alliance moved to the forefront of the agrarian revolt in the 1880s, as farmers in the South and West found it increasingly difficult to survive economically.
Efforts were made in 1889 to bring the two Alliances and the Knights of Labor into a coalition of "producing classes," as well as to cooperate with the Colored Farmers' Alliance, but sectional, racial, and organizational loyalties overrode the groups' common interests.
The Populist platform that year repeated nearly all the Alliance demands, and although the defeat of the Populists in 1896 finished both the party and the Alliance, many of the reforms they had advocated were adopted over the next half century.
