The meeting of the Parliamentary Group of the liberal democrat European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party which took place in Brussels on July 13, 2004 approved a recommendation to unite in a new group with MEPs of the European Democratic Party founded by François Bayrou's UDF, the Lithuanian Labour Party and the Italian Margherita.

Whatever efforts the international community is currently undertaking, millions of people continue to live in regimes where there is no independent judiciary, democratic system or freedom of expression and where torture, racism, capital punishment, slavery, forced labour, crimes against humanity, genocide, ethnic cleansing, still tragically occur on a daily basis.
We believe that the political and economic progress made by the European Union including the decision to enlarge the EU to include the countries of Eastern and Central Europe is a fundamental step in the right direction but it is not enough.
Despite the economic advances, men and women as individuals are not yet able to fully exercise their personal freedoms in all spheres of life, and as the Alliance of European Liberals and Democrats for Europe we will continue the struggle to achieve this goal.
