 New Georgia Encyclopedia: Gainesville State College
Spurred into action by citizen activists in the local chamber of commerce, in 1962 the Gainesville–Hall County Educational Task Force, under the leadership of businessman and former chamber president James E. Mathis Sr., began formal planning for a comprehensive program to meet the postsecondary education needs of the northeast Georgia area.
In 1979 the Hall County arts community was well served by the creation of the Gainesville Theatre Alliance, which united theater programs from Gainesville Junior College, Brenau University, and local drama groups.
