  Alliant contract options worth $225M - Boston.com
Alliant Techsystems Inc. said Monday it received contract options worth $225 million from Northrop Grumman Corp. to refurbish parts and replace propellant on Minuteman rocket motors.
Alliant, which makes ammunition, smart bombs and rocket propulsion systems for military use, said the award is the sixth of seven full-rate production options under an ICBM propulsion replacement program.
Alliant shares slipped a penny to $78.27, while Northrop shares rose 25 cents to $67.53, both in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

 NASA to Lift Alliant Sales - Space - RedOrbit
Alliant Techsystems Inc., the only maker of reusable solid rocket motors for the space shuttle, said new NASA space exploration initiatives will lift sales after the current fleet of spacecraft is retired.
Alliant, which has 4,585 employees in Utah at seven facilities, now gets about $400 million in annual sales from shuttle rocket motors, John Shroyer, chief financial officer, said at a Bank of America-sponsored investor conference Thursday.
Alliant is pursuing opportunities in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's manned space flight program that will provide "upside" to current sales, he said, without giving figures.

 ATK Alliant Techsystems Joins Hypersonics Game
Alliant Techsystems, best known as a supplier of ammunition, solid-rocket motors and advanced composite materials, moved into the hypersonics arena Nov. 21 with the acquisition of GASL and Micro Craft from Allied Aerospace of Newport News, Va. The purchase price was roughly $40 million, according to Dan Murphy, Alliant Techsystems’ chief executive officer.
In the Nov. 24 press release, Murphy said the acquisitions, combined with Alliant Techsystems’ current portfolio, establish it as the clear leader in hypersonic propulsion.
But Alliant Techsystems is not the only firm positioning itself for a potential surge in U.S. government spending on hypersonic technology.

The stock seems rather expensive to me now, but the company is performing well and reducing some of its risk, and I can see potential sources of a future upside.
Alliant capped its fiscal year with a solid performance.
And let's not forget, the U.S. does tend to find itself in armed conflict fairly frequently, so I wouldn't just assume that in the future there will be an automatic shift away from guns and bombs toward electronics and such.
