Reynolds came to the Yankees in an October 1946 trade that sent Joe Gordon to the Indians, and led the AL in winning percentage in his first season in New York.
Reynolds won the Hickock Belt in 1951 as the top professional athlete of the year, and in 1952 he was second in the AL MVP voting, recording 20 wins and six saves, and leading the AL in both ERA (2.06) and shutouts (6).

Reynolds, the Yankees' big winner in 1952 with twenty victories, struck out Roy Campanella to end the inning and, outside of allowing a walk to Carl Furillo, held the Dodgers to no runs in the ninth.

It is named for the former Oklahoma A&M pitcher who, the legend goes, was spotted by coach Hank Iba at a track and field practice and asked if he could pitch.
Reynolds struck out four batters without throwing a called ball, and he went on to star for the Cowboys prior to a major-league career in which he tossed two no-hitters for the Yankees in 1951.

The family story goes that my grandmother, Mary Amanda Reynolds, had a brother, Richard Reynolds, born May 23, 1857, who left Kentucky after the Civil War and married a Creek Indian, Eliza Root, in Oklahoma.
They had a son, David Carlisle Reynolds, born Dec. 21, 1890, and who also married a Creek Indian, name unknown, and their son was Allie Reynolds, who pitched for the New York Yankees 1947-54.
I have a letter from David Carlisle Reynolds dated in 1984, when he would have been 94 and a retired minister.
