  Florida @ SouthEastRoads - Interstate 75 - Index
The Alligator Alley, a two-lane freeway along Florida 84, was a glaring example of poor environmental planning for road construction in the Everglades.
Alligator Alley was still two lanes in 1977, and it would brought up to Interstate standards by 1992, the year Interstate 75 was considered completed in Southwest and South Florida.
As part of this project, the Alligator Alley was improved for drainage, water flow, and animal migration, thus creating a more environmentally friendly freeway corridor.

Alligator Alley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alligator Alley (also Everglades Parkway) is a nickname for that section of Interstate 75 (Florida State Route 93) that runs from Naples on the west coast of Florida to Weston on the east.
It was originally built as a two-lane toll road connecting the two coasts of Florida, and was later connected to Interstate 75 as an east-west continuation of the highway, which otherwise ran north and south.
Before that time, Alligator Alley was signed as SR 84; the ends that were not redesignated I-75 still retain the SR 84 signage.

 Interstate 75
As for the rest of Interstate 75, in the late 1980's construction was taking place on the segments in the Ft. Lauderdale-Miami area and in Naples, Interstate 75 was extended from Collier County Road 846 southward to FL 84 and the western terminus of the Alligator Alley.
Construction on bringing Alligator Alley from a two lane country road to a four lane interstate highway began in the late 1980's and continued into the early 1990's with interchanges and overpasses being built.
The popular use of Alligator Alley and its status as a two lane road was creating too many accidents, especially that of the head on type and that was principally why Alligator Alley had to be brought up to interstate standards.

I could feel alligators looking at me. I told May the whole thing made me nervous and wondered aloud what the swamps would be like without roads and convertibles with air conditioning.
By this time in our trip, my fascination with alligators was getting a little tiresome for May. As a boy in Philadelphia my experience with alligators was confined to the little stuffed ones my cousins brought back from their grandparent's home in Florida.
I pointed it out to May and stood there for a while, smugly overcoming my deep fear of these animals, before I really got the creeps and decided it was time to go back in the car and keep driving.
