- Both the groups Alligatoridae, including modern alligators and caimans, and Ostreidae, containing modern oysters, have the rank of "family" in the Linnean system, suggesting that they are somehow biologically equivalent.
Maybe the progenitors of Ostreidae and Alligatoridae lived at the same time in the geologic past.
Ostreidae and Alligatoridae are so different that an objective standard of morphological similarity can't be envisioned.

Some characteristics of crocodilians: This is the smallest order of reptilians; it contains only 23 species in three families: Alligatoridae (Alligators, caimans, and dwarf caimans), Crocodylidae (crocodiles and dwarf crocodiles), and Gavialidae (true and false gharials or gavials).
Crocodilians have some features that liken them more to mammals than to other reptiles: their heart has four chambers, they have a structure similar to the diaphragm of mammals, and they have a bony secondary palate.
Some characteristics of Alligatoridae: In alligatorids the teeth cannot be seen when the mouth is closed because teeth in the lower jaw fit into pits in the upper jaw (in crocodylids the fourth tooth in the lower jaw is visible when the mouth is closed).

The abandonment of Linnean ranks doesn't mean that a hierarchical classification is not still relevant, but simply that the name of those ranks should not be important.
Therefore, instead of classifying the American alligator and the various caiman species in the Family Alligatoridae simply because they both share similar morphologies, instead we can define the Alligatoridae as the last common ancestor of all those species - i.e.
"If we define Alligatoridae as the last common ancestor of Alligator, Caiman, Paleosuchus, and Melanosuchus and all of its descendants, we are recognizing a real group defined by a completely natural event - a speciation event.
