Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Wiltshire   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Wiltshire is particularly well-known for its pre-Roman archaeology.
In the 6th and 7th centuries Wiltshire was at the western edge of Saxon Britain, as Cranborne Chase and the Somerset Levels prevented the advance to the west.
In the north west of the county, on the border with Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset, the underlying rock is the resistant oolite limestone of the Cotswolds.

Wiltshire County Council - Wiltshire Community History Get Community Information
A village at Allington, on both sides of the Moor Brook, existed by the early 11th century and again it is reasonable to assume that its origins were at least a century or two earlier.
Allington remained an average sized village for the Vale of Pewsey, but after its population reached a peak of 188 in 1841 it fell into a decline and by 1921 only 55 people lived here.
The Victoria History of Wiltshire is a partnership between local authorities and the Institute of Historical Research at London University.

In a paper titled 'Bells of the County of Wilts' published in the Wiltshire Archaelogical Magazine in 1855 William Springe is listed as a name inscribed on one of the eight bells at Erchfont along with William Barnes, Churchwardens in 1658.
In the Victoria County History of Wiltshire mention is made of the successive generations of Springbatts at the mill.
The Springbetts and Wiltshire emigrants to South Australia are responsible for the Vale of Pewsey names in that part of the world and for the Pewsey Vale vinyards which now exports wine overseas.

Wiltshire   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Along with being a county rich in prehistoric remains, Wiltshire also has one of the highest concentrations of historic houses and gardens in the country as well as some fine downland and woodland that is ideal for walking or cycling.
To the south of Swindon lies the fertile Vale of Pewsey and the charming town of Marlborough that has acted as a centre for the surrounding farming communities for centuries as has the ancient town of Devizes to the west.
Finally, Wiltshire is also famous for its White Horses, a series of symbolic cuttings made into the chalk downland that, whilst some of them have been made relatively recently, have a history that dates back well over a 1,000 years.

It was also an interesting and controversial choice I thought because the original Allington formation seemed to contain a few errors.
