Dysart recognizes the centrality of the horses in Alan’s life, the passion that they’ve inspired, and the simple fact that, even though Alan is living outside the bounds of convention, his life is more complete than that of the average person—even Dysart’s.
Dysart’s lack of fulfillment is as tangible as Alan’s enthusiasm, and this creates one of the most striking juxtaposition in the play.
Dysart is also torn because he knows the qualities that make us human—emotion, attraction, and pain—are all things that his remedy will quell.

I’ve been watching Allison for quite a while now and feel that her portrayal of Jill was some of the best work she’s done.
Frankly, I went in with a strong sense of dread as Jill’s fateful seduction of Alan, the trigger to the blinding of the horses, entailed full nudity, something I was not thrilled with.
But Allison’s performance allowed me to forget that she was my wife and actually believe, if only for a few minutes, that she was Jill, a sensuous character who didn’t know what she was getting into with Alan.
