Paleobotany of Australia and New Zealand conifers
Rainfall was high, but the associated presence of Allocasuarina indicates forest edge conditions, or perhaps disturbance by fire, which removed the canopy long enough for this genus to have a temporary advantage.
The part of this zone in which Allocasuarina was absent may represent the peak frequency of fires, which were detrimental to Allocasuarina.
A dramatic increase in rainfall and possibly soil-nutrients seems to have eliminated fire and caused the local replacement of Eucalyptus and Allocasuarina by a podocarp notophyll evergreen vine forest, including Elaeocarpaceae, Lauraceae, Myrtaceae, Podocarpaceae and, in areas of impeded drainage, palms.

Allocasuarina inophloia - Growing Native Plants
Allocasuarina is a member of the Casuarinaceae family, consisting of four genera, along with Gymnostoma, Casuarina and Ceuthostoma.
Allocasuarina is a genus endemic to Australia comprising of 59 species, mainly occurring in southern Australia.
Allocasuarina are known for their ability to occur in nutrient deficient soils, which may encourage their potential use in cultivation.

is found in warm temperate regions and Allocasuarina is mainly in warm to the southern cool temperate regions of Australia.
Alternatively, the specificity of Casuarina and Allocasuarina is simply due to the drier habitats of Australia that these genera inhabit, where a smaller subset of Frankia strains are able to survive.

The effect of inoculating seedlings of Eucalyptus grandis, Allocasuarina littoralis and Casuarina equisetifolia with two isolates of Pisolithus and two isolates of Scleroderma from under eucalypts was examined in a glasshouse trial.
On Casuarina, the fungi were either unable to colonize the rhizosphere (one isolate of Pisolithus), or sheathed roots, resembling ectomycorrhizas, formed on 1-2% of the fine roots.
Ectomycorrhizas formed in associations with Eucalyptus and Allocasuarina had fully differentiated mantles and Hartig nets in which the host and fungal cells were linked by an extensive fibrillar matrix.

The leaves are reduced to tiny brown scale-like structures and are borne in whorls at intervals along the greenish-coloured branchlets which carry out photosynthesis - a special adaptation so that the plant can withstand periods of drought.
Allocasuarina crassa is dioecious; that is there are separate male and female plants.
When first offered for sale in nurseries the labels stated that Allocasuarina crassa grew 2 metres high, but it was then found that it grows much bigger with the extra water and nutrients in garden situations.

The two Victorian genera are Casuarina and Allocasuarina.
Casuarinas have grey or yellow-brown winged seeds, and the valves on the cones are thinly woody and extend well beyond the cone body.
Allocasuarinas (meaning other-casuarinas) have red-brown to fl, shining winged seeds, and the valves are thickly woody, which protrude only slightly.

Five Casuarina species and five Allocasuarina species were inoculated in vitro with three isolates of Pisolithus sp.
7870 and PR86 invaded the cortical cells of Allocasuarina luehmannii and Allocasuarina decaisneana, respectively, thus forming ectendomycorrhizas.
In fully developed ectomycorrhizas, the epidermal cells were radially elongated and the Hartig net never developed beyond the epidermal cells.
