Allography, from the Greek for "other writing", has several meanings which all relate to how words and sounds are written down.
Allographs have found use in humor and puns; the most famous example of allographic humour is probably that of spelling fish ghoti.
Examining the letter g, for example, in different typefaces and written in different people's handwriting will provide an extraordinary range of shapes which are all instantly recognisable to us as representing one sound.

Allography is a term used by James Elkins in his book, The Domain of Images, to encompass the arts of calligraphy, typography, paleography, hieroglyphic, and layout design.
It refers to the changes that can be made to letters and words that make them into images without at the same time altering their alphabetic identity.
In a sub-section of his chapter on allography, which is called "the page as a picture," Elkins mentions Hrabanus Maurus’ De laudibus sanctae crucis.

I am tempted to try writing my lojban without joining cmavo at all for a while, and see what happens.
There is another form of allography to which this is related, and that is the optional use of punctuation symbols (?, < etc) - they are redundant but (probably) permitted, and I have sometimes used them myself, though not consistently.
By design, these are unnecessary - the words convey all the structure and the metasemantics of these symbols.
