Allotment (gardening) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the United Kingdom, an allotment is a small area of land, let out at a nominal yearly rent by local government or independent allotment associations, for individuals to grow their own food.
The allotment system began in the 18th century: for example, a 1732 engraving of Birmingham, England shows the town encircled by allotments, some of which still exist to this day.
Allotment users have a organisation that campaigns on their behalf, the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners, known as the "NSALG".

 German Allotment Gardens
Allotment gardens consist of a piece of land between 200 and 400 square meters, most of them with a little shed for storing gardening tools.
The basis for a successful and permanent establishment of allotment gardens was laid through the establishment of associations of small scale gardeners in the cities (Kleingartenvereine, Schrebergartenvereine).
The keys for the transferability of the German allotment system to Southern African Cities is the functioning of local institutions, capacity building of interest groups and the awareness of political responsibilities among local politicians.

The allotment process mandated by the Dawes Act differed from earlier approaches through treaties, special acts, and informal arrangements mainly in that it was compulsory at the discretion of the president.
The idea of allotments implies farming, but the lack of interest in that subject shown by the Lake Mohonk reformers and the commissioner of Indian affairs even as the Dawes Act was being implemented suggests that improvement of Indian agriculture was not a serious goal of the supporters of the act.
To the extent that allotment may be said to have failed as a means of improving Indian agriculture, the cause is clear, and it does not lie, as some historians have suggested, in any inability of Indian people generally to adjust to farm life.

The Allotment Movement in England, 1793-1873
In his study of the allotment movement in nineteenth century England, Jeremy Burchardt, Lecturer in Rural History at the University of Reading, has entered the continuing debate on the condition of the laboring classes in rural society.
Although relatively few allotments were established during the first phase between 1793 and 1829, the overall success of the early plots provided a model when crisis again struck in the form of the Swing Riots of 1830.
Burchardt argues that the allotment movement was an essentially rural phenomenon until the third quarter of the nineteenth century.

I use the expression allotment holding because this refers both to the active work that takes place on allotments and their tenurial status; indeed the British word 'allotments' indicates this, as small pieces of land 'allotted', and rented from a landowner/landlord.
Moreover, there has been a tendency to regard allotments as an easy 'soft touch' politically, and allotments have through the middle of this century suffered an image of being anachronistic, the old man in a cloth cap, struggling to gather a few crops.
Also allotment gardens were expected to serve as places which would enhance the chances for mutual communication between urban people and those in rural areas.
