 Ally McLeod Information
Ally was reluctant to move to St Mirren F.C. in 1956, but having secured a guarantee that the reported £8,000 fee would tremendously help Third Lanark's survival, he moved and carved out a superb playing career.
Defeat against England (who had fallen to McLeod's team the previous year) in the Home Championships of 1978 was taken to mean little: McLeod was tinkering with the team and the players' main concern was to avoid injury.
McLeod gave Graeme Souness his first game of the World Cup and was rewarded with a much-improved team performance.

 Tribute to Ally McLeod
But Ally's star fell to earth with his team's shameful collapse, and for a time, he became a scornful figure, and for some the object of remorseless ridicule.
However, part of Ally's remarkable legacy was to be the Tartan Army itself, which probably would not have grown in such ridiculous stature, had it not been for the ignominy of Argentina and the realisation that 'its only a game', but everything remains 'to be played for'.
Now, stricken by Alzheimer's disease, Ally struggles to maintain his once-jolly composure but, as with many suffers from this cruel disease, the past is fading.

Football | Was Ally McLeod really a born winner?
Ally McLeod was born in Glasgow on February 26 1931, and judging by his record as a player and a manager, it's a fair bet that he didn't come out with the word "winner" stamped on his forehead.
Scotland's World Cup 78 campaign started on a high, with Ally declaring to the world that he would be back with "at least a medal", to a background of maniacally happy fans singing "We're on the way with Ally's Army".
McLeod's fate was a series of jobs (in Motherwell, Airdrie and Ayr respectively) throughout the 1980s, where he again failed to live up to his "born winner" tag.

The passing of Ally McLeod this week brought back many memories — especially of Scotland’s 1978 World Cup Finals escapade.

Individually and collectively, they were woeful against Peru and Iran, but unexpectedly and inexplicably showed just what Ally had meant in that brilliant 3-2 win over eventual finalists Holland.
