Topic: Alma Swanley

 [No title]
I was coming back from Gillingham on the train, after their game had been postponed late, and just happened to look out to my left as we went past and saw the teams running out.
Alma’s near neighbours and former Kent League rivals Swanley Town have also fallen into junior football, their St.Mary’s Road ground would now be totally un-suitable for the stricter ground gradings.
It was still a shame to lose somewhere as special and unique as Crockenhill along with former champions Swanley Furness, formerly Danson who had moved from Crook Log to share with Alma, and although they did have lights Corinthian also went.

Although a stones throw from Junction 2 of the M25, the Swanley area of Kent is remarkably rural in places, and it was Mike’s beloved home club of Crockenhill (where he is secretary) where we made our first stop.
Sadly, we were unable to gain access to Green Court Road nearby; the former home of Alma Swanley (latterly Furness), so it was off to another ghost ground: that of Darenth Heathside.
The club did not re-apply for membership of the Kent League at the end of the 1994/95 season and although Mike wrote optimistically in 1998 that senior football was likely to return to the ground, that has not been the case.

Ill Do It My Way Says Strong Man Sampson (from This Is Local London)
A serious illness peritonitis wrecked his top flight career soon afterwards and he left The Den in 1975, joining Dartford, where he skippered the side, and his 247 games included winners medals in both the Southern League and League Cup.
Sampson briefly served Sutton United, Bromley, Tooting and Mitcham, Erith and Belvedere and Alma Swanley before his arrival at Tonbridge, and, after leaving there, he managed Sheppey United, once a Southern League force, for two years.
But it was at Herne Bay "a terrific football club" that he enjoyed some of his most successful times, winning the Kent League title four times in seven seasons.

Sampson's career in football started at Millwall where he played three first team games between 1969 and 1974.
He then spent six years with Dartford before short spells at Welling United, Bromley, Tooting & Mitcham, Erith & Belvedere, Tonbridge Angels, where he was player-manager, and finally Alma Swanley, his last club before he retired as a player in 1991.
Caught by the football bug, Sampson moved straight into management with Kent Premier side Sheppey United before taking charge at rivals Herne Bay for five years until 1998.
