Although this park overlooks Silicon Valley (and even San Francisco on a clear day) and some trails are almost literally in the backyards of expensive Almaden Valley homes, there is a lot of great hiking here.

Quicksilver is another word for mercury, referring to its liquid properties (it's the only metal that is liquid at room temperature) and shiny silver color.
Mining began here in the 1840's, and the New Almaden Mines (later, after a shift in ownership the name was changed to the Quicksilver Mining Company) became a thriving area with several settlements, including Englishtown and Spanishtown, a company store, and school.
In spring, Almaden Quicksilver is famous for grand displays of wildflowers, but the park is pretty in autumn as well, when bigleaf maples, and fl and blue oaks shed their colorful leaves.

Records for Almaden Quicksilver County Park include one heard in the Senator Mines Area on 6-15-00 (FVs), a newly fledged bird near the trailhead parking area in New Almaden on 6-12-00 (JMa), and a pair in that same area on 3-10-01 (AVe).
Nesting was confirmed at Twin Creeks on 4-11-88 and at the junction of Bertram and Alamitos Roads in New Almaden on 4-2-03.
Records for Almaden Quicksilver County Park include 2 in the Guadalupe Creek drainage on 1-21-99 (JMa), and 1 in a wooded gulch at the base of the Hacienda Trail on 3-7-99 (AVe).

Almaden Quicksilver County Park is a 4,147 acres (17 km²) park that includes the grounds of former mercury ("quicksilver") mines adjacent to south San Jose, California, USA.
The park's elevation varies greatly--the most used entrances (on the east side of the park) are less than 600 feet (180 m) above sea level, while the highest point in the park is over 1,700 feet (520 m) above sea level.
The remains of a variety of structures left over from the 135 years of mining activity, including housing for the up to 1,800 miners, are scattered about the park, with the biggest concentration at what was known as English Camp, established by Cornish miners in the 1860s.

The occasional dilapidated shed, the remains of a 70-foot brick chimney perched on the hill, a fenced-off ore furnace, and rusting pieces of machinery woven with poison oak vines indicate past human activity.
Several million years later, this ore became extremely valuable; mercury—or quicksilver as it was sometimes called—was an essential element in the process used to refine and purify gold and silver.

All of the trails we hiked in the park were wide dirt roads.
There was a note on the map display board that said the New Almaden Trail (which we weren't taking, anyway) had been closed for several months due to a damaged foot bridge.
Almost every other tree in the park we saw was completely green, but here was this one tree burning brightly with fall colors.

Biking is limited to a single loop here, but it does pass very close to many of the last remnants of the mines and offered pleasant views of the east side of the Santa Cruz range, Silicon Valley, and Guadalupe reservior.
The parking lot was just a speedy coast downhill from here, and for the first time in awhile it wasn't night by the time we got back-- just late dusk.
Apparently these mines were some of the most lucrative in California, even during the gold rush, and "Almaden" (a common street name in San Jose) was a reference to the famous mines in Spain.

Not only does Almaden Quicksilver County Park have decent hiking, but it also has large sections labeled Hazardous Area; Closed to the Public.
The hazard is mercury, which was mined at Almaden for 135 years (until 1976).
But this wasn't any ordinary mountain: it was Mine Hill, the highest point in the park and smack dab in the center of the hazardous area zone.

Four people showed up for this Saturday’s Almaden Quicksilver County Park field trip, two of them were Camera Club members.
For birders this park is one of the hotspots of the Bay Area.
The park currently has two mountain lions in residence by the lake and numerous bobcats and other predatory mammals.
