 The Old Farmer's Almanac
The Almanac was right again, and what is more amazing, they had known that this very moment would occur in a hip, young urbanite's quest for direction, in a town far from the Puritans' adopted homeland.
Then it occurred to me that though the Almanac, with the exception of the tide debacle, had fared well that day with regard to prophesy, the Northern Hemisphere is a large area, and the earthquake was just as likely to take place in Liechtenstein as Chicago.
But perhaps the most fascinating and revealing chart in the Almanac was the one that measured "Calorie Burning." Here the infinitely wise Almanac revealed that some of the common sports I had played my entire life could be favorably compared to the sort of household and outdoor chores I have spent a lifetime avoiding.

Although noting that "the use of almanacs or maps may be the product of legitimate recreational or commercial activities," the bulletin urged police to watch for suspects carrying almanacs, especially if they include suspicious notations or marks, because "the practice of researching potential targets is consistent with known methods of al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations."
The warning came as a surprise to publishers of almanacs, which range from statistical tomes listing the tallest buildings and the longest bridges to folksy journals including planetary charts and apple-pie recipes.
"Our almanac is about as far away as you can get from terrorism and about as close as you can get to what you would think of as Americana," said Peter Geiger, editor of the Farmers' Almanac, a 185-year-old compendium of weather predictions, cleaning tips and other advice.

The Almanac of American Politics 1972, the first of what are now 17 editions of the Almanac, appeared in November 1971, when I was 27.
When I first started writing the Almanac, the target audience I had in mind were teenage boys, the kind who are often dismissed as nerds, who have an insatiable hunger for information about American politics: in other words, me at 14.
This is the first Almanac to provide a long Introduction, with separate sections on the Presidency, the Reagan government, the Senate, the House and the Governors and Big City Mayors.
