  Seventies' Greatest Album Covers
Cover design was already an art, especially in the jazz field, long before the explosion of rock in the Sixties, but with the meteoric success of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones came a power shift from the record companies to the musicians themselves, who assumed greater control over the visual presentation of their work.
Below are their 54 selections from the 1970s, with commentary by the albums' designers on the first 28.
The twelve-inch album cover that graced so much of our favorite music in the Seventies may be all but history, but its artistic legacy endures to this day -- even in miniature on compact disc.

Apollo 18 (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was released in 1992 and named after the Apollo missions, which ended at Apollo 17.
The album marked the first conscious effort by John Linnell and John Flansburgh to branch out of their early sound, opting for more traditional rock rhythms and fuller arrangements.
The group even performed the album in its entirety at a few special shows in 2003.

 Pugwash - Records
Bursting at the seams with creativity, this album is held together by the simple greatness of the songs that it brings fresh to the market.
Long a favourite of the live set, "Apples" is the first Single off the new Pugwash album "Almanac".
Already A-listed by several top dj's, this is a juicy slice of lyrical power pop, full to the brim of playful, melodic, musical joy.

CLUAS Indie Album Reviews: Pugwash 'Almanac'
'Almanac' is an album of original compositions by one of Ireland's undiscovered songwriters Thomas Walsh (with a little help from Keith Farrell) and features contributions from Duncan Maitland (ex-Picturehouse) and Jason Falkner (Air) amongst others.
The standout track both musically and lyrically on this album is 'Omega Man' (just pipping 'Keep Movin On' for the accolade).
This is the second Pugwash album (the follow up to 'Almond Tea'), and while it may regarded as "the second difficult album", the only difficulty I have with it, is leaving it out of my cd player.

This doesn't ruin the album -- many groups should hope to make an album this good -- but it does undermine the can't-go-home-again melancholy that Ryan seems to be conjuring.
And even though Bozulich spills her sexuality all over parts of this album, to peg the Fibbers as another part of this whole chick explosion is to miss-identify what's going on here, as well as unfairly ignore the other (male) members of the band.
Too tough, too loud, and too void of tenderness for Lilith (I keep having this wonderful vision of Bozulich, one strap of her dress off her shoulder, beating the shit out of Jewel), Bozulich is using gender not in the name of sisterhood, but in the name of rock.

Amazon.com: Their Complete General Recordings: Music: Almanac Singers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The Almanac Singers may not have sold as many records as their contemporaries (blame that on the unpopular pacifism they preached as the United States entered World War II), but their versions of these tunes are simply timeless.
However, if you want an Almanac CD which presents 29 of the total of 35 tracks the group ever preserved, and includes the union and political stuff along with these songs, too, then go buy the disc titled "Songs of Protest." It is a great value.
The Almanac Singers were only together for a little over a year, but since their membership consisted of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lee Hayes, Millard Lampell, and (sometimes) Pete Hawes they constitute a folk music version of a super group.

Whiskeytown : Stranger's Almanac - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
His world-weary drawl is pervasive throughout the album, with an honesty that belies his age (Adams was 22 at the time of recording, but many of the songs were written well before then).
Unfortunately, the album also drags in spots and often sounds like a studio creation, heavy with reverb and overdubs (unlike their collection of demos and indie release Faithless Street).
One sure indicator of the notorious volatility of the band lies in the liner notes that read "This time Whiskeytown were as follows...," showing the signs of unrest that quickly burned out those around Adams' lifestyle and temperament.

Whiskeytown - Pneumonia, Stranger's Almanac Review
The album, originally recorded in 1999, could almost be used as the definitive piece for the Americana or No Depression genre, outshining Jeff Tweedy or Jay Farrar fine songwriting.
Strangers Almanac was my introduction to the band (as well as a lot of other people) and it still sticks as one of the finest moments of this ill-fated band.

To me this album shows a little more maturity and the move to the more "Ryan Adams-type" releases that would follow.
Here are some lesser known albums in the genre that are fantastic.
Desperation, awe, anguish, love, and a resolve to communicate to the other person that what they're doing is a tremendous mistake--all delivered in the form of a song that, musically, sweeps you up, propells you along, and makes you catch your breath.

The surprise return of these self-proclaimed shoegazers was a welcome one, and I was happy to see the quick release of the 'Elemental' EP in February.
They've been playing a bunch of the songs live for quite awhile, and the album has some great guests: Mission of Burma's Clint Conley contributes some vocals, Chris Toppin and Hilken Mancini sing together, just as they did back in their Fuzzy days.
Their next stop was Jade Tree, who re-released the album, co-released another EP, and then put out the second disc, 'Winners Never Quit', in 2000.

Further, the album art seems tailor-made to be the language of a secret society, with characters that look like they should be covering the inside of a long-forgotten pyramid or shadowy suburban trade organization.
Armed with their voices and an array of instruments and implements (Nautical Almanac explicitly state, however, that the album was made completely sans electricity/computers), they create confusing constructions of mangled sounds and warped voices.
The album’s standout track is undoubtedly “Widdeling the Reflex Fiddle.” With its warbled backwoods dementia and circuitous background wiggles, Nautical Almanac manage to transport the listener to some sort of outer space hillbilly jamboree.

Given that the Weavers evolved out of the politically oriented Almanac Singers, and that this album was released during a period when Peter, Paul & Mary and other folk groups were reviving their songs with commercial success, calling it The Weavers' Almanac evoked their past in a newly fashionable present.
Having reached the best-seller charts twice the previous year, the group seemed on the verge of regaining their popularity, and this album must have been intended to foster that comeback.
In retrospect, this is an enjoyable album (if brief in the CD era), though it lacks the fervor of the Weavers' younger competitors of the day.

 * Dusted Reviews - Nautical Almanac *
Recently transplanted from the midwest to Baltimore, Harper and partner Carly Ptak have set up their own private alternate dimension in the city where Poe died.
Each of the disc’s 13 pieces comes titled with clear depictions attesting to the group’s visceral MO: “Absorbing and Distorting," “Cross Dementia," “1 Million Synapses Frying.” Clearly toying with both their own wiring and the listener’s, Harper and Ptak ease the flow of frittered zags and fizzling bolts only with brief silences.
They may tinker strictly with machines, but aside from the hardware Nautical Almanac has far more in common with the beardos of the free-folk movement than the anti-music industrialists of the noise scene.

So, yes, based on my experience with Strangers Almanac, much of the hype surrounding Ryan Adams is deserved and you are making a big mistake if you like alt-country and don't have this album in your collection.
