Almanach de Gotha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Almanach de Gotha was a directory of Europe's nobility first published in 1763 at the ducal court of Friedrich III of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (which included the city of Gotha).
Moreover, most princely families of the Russian Empire were not included in the Gotha at all, while the Bagrationi of Georgia (presumed to be the oldest royal dynasty of Europe) technically deserved the place in the first section.
The Gotha's condescending attitude towards Eastern European nobility and royalty led to the proliferation of German mediatized princesses in the royal houses of Europe.

Gotha (town) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gotha is a town in the Land of Bundesland of Thuringia, in Germany.
It is the capital of the District of Gotha.
Gotha has played an important role in the Germany's workers' movement: the German socialist party (SPD) was founded here in 1875, by the merging of two organizations: the Social Democratic Workers' Party, led by August Bebel and Wilhelm Liebknecht, and the General German Workers' Association, founded by Ferdinand Lassalle.

 The Almanach de Gotha
Also to be found in the Almanach de Gotha at this period, were all the details supplied today by diaries, for example, the areas of the principal countries of the world, population figures, the list of the largest towns as well as information on their military strength and their national income.
In 1780 the Almanach was translated into Italian in Venice, and it was soon seen in the United States of America where the quasiroyalty of George Washington caused the atmosphere, the manners, and customs of the old monarchies to prevail.
The daughter of the prince of Croy or of the count Erbach might become empress of Austria or queen of Bavaria, but the daughter of a family as distinguished and ancient as that of the prince of Bauffremont, or the daughter of an English duke as eminent as the duke of Marlborough, was not eligible.

Lalor, Cyclopaedia of Political Science, V.1, Entry 44, ALMANACH DE GOTHA: Library of Economics and Liberty
The first idea of this almanach is due to Wilhelm von Rotberg (died in 1795, minister of state).
Toward the end of the last century events took such a serious turn that the amusing part of the almanach was dropped and the place that it occupied given to historical and statistical information.
—Although the Almanach de Gotha is the property of an individual house, (Justus Perthes at Gotha since 1816), it is almost considered as the official almanach of reigning princes and the higher nobility.

The French Imperial Almanac of 1810
The volume of the Almanach Impérial presented here reflects the French Empire at its height.  Here is the broad extent of the civil and military establishment of Napoleon's Empire.  It is an important and unique source on the organization and personnel of the Empire.
During the Revolution it was transformed into the Almanach National de France.  From 1804 to 1813 it was the Almanach Impérial.
We have chosen not to translate the Almanach into English.  Since it consists mainly of names, places, titles and dates, even those without even a rudimentary knowledge of French should be able to navigate their way through the book armed only with a good French-English dictionary.
