  ALMANDINE (Iron Aluminum Silicate)
Almandine is the most common of the garnets and is usually the garnet found in garnet schists (a type of metamorphic rock composed mostly of mica).
Almandine, like other garnets, forms rounded crystals with 12 rhombic or 24 trapezoidal faces or combinations of these and some other forms.
Pure almandine and pure pyrope are rare in nature and most specimens are a percentage of the two.

Lets talk gemstones: Garnet Gropue Pyralspites
Because pure almandine is rare, the term almandine is used when the iron in its chemical composition exceeds that of magnesium in its solid solution series with pyrope.
Translucent and transparent almandine material frequently houses short, stubby, low-relief crystals of biotite, ilmenite, spinel, quartz, apatite, monazite, haloed metamict zircon crystals, rod-like hornblende, and asbestiform needles of augite and acicular rutile crossed at 70 and 110 degrees.
Almandine’s name is a corruption of the name of the ancient city of Alabanda, located in what is now southwest Turkey, near where it was discovered.

ENVIRONMENT: Almandine occurs in diorite of plutonic rocks, and with andalusite, hornblende, and biotite in hornfels and schist of contactand regional metamorphic rocks.
