Kazakhstan is to oblige all foreign airlines to switch routes to its new capital Astana from the country's biggest city, Almaty, by September 1, a government official said on Wednesday.
The oil-rich Central Asian country of 15 million moved its capital from Almaty, near the Chinese border, 1,000 km (620 miles) to Astana, in the middle of the wind-swept steppe in the north, in 1997.
Almaty is the country's commercial hub and, with a population of 1.2 million, has more than double the number of residents of Astana.

The government said earlier this week it expected all foreign airlines still flying to scenic Almaty, in the Central Asian state's southeast, to switch by September to Astana, a wind-swept Soviet-era city some 1,000 km (620 miles) to the north.
Almaty is the commercial hub and with a population of 1.2 million has more than double the number of residents of Astana, which became the capital in 1997.
The aviation committee official said the Kazakh government was in talks with foreign civil aviation authorities to reword flight agreements to make Astana the new official destination.

People in Almaty like to get paid by US dollars but prefer now euro as this is a more stable coin then the Tenge (rate proximity 100 tenge is 9 eurocent).
When we left Almaty it was greyish weather with lots of fog, and it was the same in the mountains partly even worse.
Then we set off to the city of Almaty and stayed in a restaurant most of the evening eating and drinking, and finally at night we went to the airport to wait for a few hours before we departed to Frankfurt.
