For most of the 1960s, the Almaz program was put on the backburner, as the Soviet space industry concentrated its main efforts on the Moon race with the United States.
The Almaz station was downgraded to a heavy radar-carrying reconnaissance satellite, which could be visited by servicing crews and later to a fully unmanned spacecraft.
As proposed in 1964, the Almaz space station, also designated 11F71 or 11F71B, was designed to have a rotating crew of three people and an operational life of one or two years.

Almaz (Salyut)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Almaz was a small space station project developed specifically for purposes of piloted observational recconnaissance of U.S. military assets from low Earth orbit.
The use of the TKS as a crew delivery and add-on vehicle for the Almaz core station was stipulated in an official governmental decree dated 16 June 1970.
Certainly the most enigmatic payload on the Almaz space station complex was a 23 mm rapid fire cannon developed by OKB-16 (now KB Tochmash) headed by Chief Designer A. Nudel'man. Although unofficial sources hint that the cannon was actually carried on Salyut-3, most reliable sources suggest that the weapon was never deployed in orbit.

The initial on-orbit mass of Almaz 1 was 18,500 kg with sufficient propellants to maintain the vehicle at a low altitude for up to two years and to provide for a controlled reentry over abroad ocean area at the end of mission.
On Almaz 1 this was divided Between the SAR and a multi-channel microwave radiometer operating at 6-37.5 GHz with a swath of 600 km and a resolution of 10-30 km.

The Almaz small space station design concept was to support a crew of 2-3 cosmonauts (on a rotating basis) with an operational spacecraft life of one to two years.
As a consequence, the Almaz space station was downgraded to a heavy radar-carrying reconnaissance satellite, which could be visited by servicing crews and later to a fully unmanned (referred to as "automatic") spacecraft.
Epilog: The Almaz and TKS designs, however, live on into the 21st century - the Almaz as the ISS (International Space Station) base block since the Zvezda module is of OPS-5/Almaz heritage.
