The college is a liberal arts four-year school that is affiliated with the Free Methodist Church, a church with an evangelical foundation.
Throughout much of the school's history, the main areas for study were in primary and secondary education, with a strong secondary area in preparing students for careers in the fields of medicine and the sciences.
In 1992 the school celebrated its 100th anniversary and was featured on the NBC "Today Show." Greenville College is also famous for the band, Jars of Clay, who met and formed their band on campus during the nineties.

In 1838 his future wife, the niece of the wife of President Samuel Wait of Wake Forest College, convinced him to accept Dr. Wait's invitation to join the faculty as professor of mathematics and natural philosophy White also served as secretary, and later as treasurer, of the board of trustees.
The college historian said that White, being a New Englander and against slaveholding, became increasingly obnoxious in a slave state as the sectional bitterness increased.
The college history also indicates that White was not in total harmony with some members of the board of trustees.

Planning for the college began when Brown University roommates John White and Stephen Morse discussed their hopes to establish a woman’s college where females could receive an education equal to that of their male counterparts.
Both men married and eventually settled in Bond County, Illinois, where in 1854 Morse’s wife Almira put up her substantial $6,000 inheritance to begin building what was initially called Almira College in her honor.
