Almoner (from the Greek eelmosyna 'alms' via Latin Almosunartius and French, known in English since circa 1300) is a chaplain or church officer who originally was in charge of distributing charity.
Almoners were attached to the courts to the kings of France and Charles VIII had a Grand Almoner in his employ.
The term almoner is rarely used anymore in English, but its equivalents in other languages are often used for many pastoral functions styled chaplain in English.

The Trustees have appointed me as Almoner and the purpose of this article is to explain the role of the Almoner and what other members of the Branch can do to assist the Almoner and thus our fellow members who are in need.
The role is not usually a proactive one but rather reactive in that the Almoner reacts to the information he receives, in our case this is more often than not through the Secretary but can be direct from members and so he has to deal with problems as they arise.

The money in the Almoner fund was willingly contributed by our brothers, and is to be spent to aide those who can use a temporary boost or continue their membership in the Scottish Rite when they find it impossible to do so on their own.
