 GIS overview of Uttaranchal State, India
This committee is headed by the District Magistrate Almora and the Principal Investigator of the NRDMS Centre Almora is the Coordinator.
For the preparation of the GIS database for the District Almora -an information need assessment workshop (Rawat,2000) was organized to prepare the list of information needs of the stakeholders of local level planning, i.e., the different line departments (forest, agriculture, horticulture, soil conservation, jal nigam, jal sansthan, public work department, irrigation, tourism, education and electricity).
To sensitize the GIS technique among the local level planners, a District Coordination Committee is constituted in District Almora.

 Analysis of Fragmentation and Anthropogenic Disturbances in the Himalayan Forests: Use of Remote Sensing and GIS
Pine (Pinus roxburghii) showed extensive presence on the entire region of the district Almora due to various reasons which may vary from favourable climate, ecology (colonizer due to early successional nature of species), abiotic (landslides) to biotic (preference for this species by the state forest department for revenue generation).
An elevational difference between ~500m and > 2500m amsl in the mountainous landscape of district Almora has produced a diversity in forest vegetation (Table 2); however, majority of the landscape falls in the altitudinal zone (~1000-1800m) favourable for pine (Pinus roxburghii) dominance in the Central Himalayan region.

The DISTRICT or ALMORA was constituted in 1891, together with Naini Tal, by a redistribution of the two former districts of Kumaon and the Tarai.
Almora is also celebrated as the scene of the British victory which terminated the war with Nepal in April 1815, and which resulted in the evacuation of Kumaon by the Gurkhas and the annexation of the province by the British.

But, on 13th October, 1891, Naini Tal district was formed by combining the Tarai and Bhabar area, with certain hill patties which were formerly included in what was known as Kumaun district which thereafter came to be known as Almora, the three districts of Almora, Naini Tal and Garhwal constituted the Kumaun Division.

 Pindari Glacier
Perhaps the best known trekking route in Kumaun, earlier located in Almora district and now in newly created Bageshwer district, the trail follows the Pindar river to it's source on the glacier are Nandakot (6,860 m), Chhanguch (6,322 m) and Nandaghunti (6,310 m).
On the east and west of Pindari glacier are the Kaphni, at the foot of Nandakot and Sunderdhunga glaciers.
Further west at the snout of the Namik glacier rises the Ramganga river.
