Topic: Almost surely

Almost surely - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
In mathematics, specifically, in probability theory, the phrase almost surely is a concise, precise way to state except on a set or event of probability measure zero.
Heuristically, almost sure events are those which have zero probability of not occuring though it is still possible that they might not occur.
The locution almost surely is to probability theory as almost everywhere is to measure theory.

Almost everywhere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In measure theory (a branch of mathematical analysis), one says that a property holds almost everywhere if the set of elements for which the property does not hold is a null set, i.e.
For example, one construction of the hyperreal number system defines a hyperreal number as an equivalence class of sequences that are equal almost everywhere as defined by an ultrafilter.
In probability theory, the phrases become almost surely, almost certain or almost always, corresponding to a probability of 1.

 Station Information - Almost surely
The weird locution almost surely is to probability theory as almost everywhere is to measure theory.
In other words an event is "almost sure" if the probability of its complement is zero, even though it may not be empty.
The phrase appears in speaking of almost sure convergence of random variables.

Almost all - Psychology Central   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
"Almost all" is sometimes used synonymously with "all but finitely many"; see almost.
For example, the prime number theorem states that the number of prime numbers less than or equal to N is asymptotically equal to N/ln N.
Occasionally, "almost all" is used in the sense of "almost everywhere" in measure theory, or in the closely related sense of "almost surely" in probability theory.

Mathematical Sciences - Preprint Archive 2003
This paper provides some sufficient conditions under which the zero solution of an Ito-Volterra equation is almost surely asymptotically stable.
Under Lipschitz continuity and linear growth assumptions, it is established that if the solution is almost surely integrable, and also almost surely square integrable, then the solution is almost surely asymptotically stable.
Additionally, if the solution is p-th mean asymptotically stable, and the p-th mean of the solution is integrable, for p=2, the solution is almost surely asymptotically stable.

eWiC: Proving Newtonian Arbiters Correct, Almost Surely   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The first is a 'toy' arbiter, whose model was chosen for its tractability; the second is Seitz's nMOS arbiter, chosen as an example of a widely used and studied design.
Because an arbiter cannot be guaranteed to respond correctly in any bounded amount of time, we verify liveness in an almost surely sense - with probability 1, the arbiter eventually grants some pending request.
Our analysis is more general than previously published results in that we allow the inputs of the arbiter to vary while the arbiter is in the metastable region, and we give conditions that ensure liveness even in the presence of such variations.

 Review -- Seven Gardening Encyclopedias
I have an older edition of the Reader's Digest book and found it to be accurate and to cover a very wide range of topics.
They are where you go for a reminder on how much wood ash it is safe to scatter on the vegetable beds, or to make sure it's not too late to sow those expensive pansy or geranium seeds.
In fact, almost by definition, a gardening encyclopedia that does its job well will lure you back for more, first to more gardening, and inevitably more books.

A single immortal monkey who executes infinitely many keystrokes will almost surely eventually type out any given text, and an infinite number of monkeys will almost surely begin producing all possible texts immediately, with no wait.
In fact, in both cases, all possible texts will almost surely be produced an infinite number of times (to be precise, an infinite number of monkeys typing k characters each will almost surely produce each work of length k an infinite number of times).
After about 1970, popular statements of the monkey image draw upon infinity, saying that an infinite number of monkeys typing for an infinite amount of time will produce a given text.

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo almost surely wins the presidential election in the west African country, said an official from the electoral body here on Tuesday.
Obasanjo has gained over 25 percent of the votes in each of 31 states out of 36 states in the whole country, said the official from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who refused to be identified.

When adopted children are grown, there's almost no resemblance at all between their IQs and those of their adoptive parents.
Herrnstein and Murray, in their brilliant book, The Bell Curve, found that all social problems were exacerbated when they moved the average IQ down statistically in their sample by just 3 points, from 100 to 97.
The number of women chronically dependent on welfare increased by almost 15%, illegitimacy increased by 8%, men who were incarcerated increased by 13%, and number of permanent high school dropouts increased by 15%.

Noise Assisted High-gain Stabilization: Almost Surely or in Second Mean
For a linear control system with multiplicative white noise, we develop (asymptotic) formulas for the dependence of almost sure and second mean exponential growth rates on a high gain parameter k.
We show that if the diffusion matrix is skew-symmetric so that the noise enters in a purely skew-symmetric way then the function g, where g(p)/p denotes the exponential growth rate of the p th mean, converges to a straight line, uniformly for 0
